Congratulations to Archie Buchanan, our well-deserved March recipient of the Dynavyte NZ Show Hunter Rider of the Month!
At just 12 years old, Archie has already built an impressive foundation, having been in the saddle since the age of three. Based in Urenui, Taranaki and riding with Waitara Pony Club, much of Archieโs early learning has come from time spent on the hunt field alongside his family, a background that has clearly shaped his confidence, determination and love for horses.
This season has marked an exciting step forward, as Archie ventured beyond Taranaki to compete across the North Island with his pony, Miss Bella. Together, they have enjoyed fantastic success in the Cat B National Series classes, consistently achieving top placings. In a standout achievement, the pair finished an impressive 4th overall in the Gains & Grains Cat B National Series for the 2025/2026 season.
What makes this partnership even more special is the journey theyโve taken together. Miss Bella was new to show hunter before teaming up with Archie and the combination has required patience, resilience and a willingness to learn. Bella has proven to be a fantastic teacher, ensuring Archie earns every result and in return, has produced some truly beautiful rounds with him.
A highlight of Archieโs season was attending the Air Napier Show Hunter Series Finals. Competing at this level in a year he had been working towards Horse of the Year was a major milestone. His performance in the evening Derby class was particularly memorable, where he produced a lovely clear round to finish 8th, a fantastic achievement in a strong field.
Beyond his results, Archie is known for his outstanding attitude. He is always willing to lend a hand, whether itโs resetting jumps or helping others around the ring. His work ethic, kindness and commitment to improving his riding have seen significant progress over the past 12 months.
Looking ahead, Archie has big goals, continuing to progress in show hunter while also stepping into show jumping and taking on bigger tracks. With his determination, bravery and positive approach, there is no doubt he has a bright future ahead.
