The Echo of Her Prayer

I read a simple line on Instagram the other day,

“Your grandmother’s prayers are still protecting you.”

and it landed somewhere deep, deeper than words.

It settled into places where old thoughts had been circling for decades, waiting for language.

I come from two grandmothers who lived their faith with certainty.
My mum’s mother, was a practising Catholic.
My dad’s mother, a steadfast fundamental Christian.
Two different paths, two different rituals, yet the same devotion to those they loved.

Of the two, it was my maternal grandmother whose prayers I felt most.

I know she prayed for us,

not because someone told me,

but because her warmth wrapped around us in ways I still can’t fully explain.

It was a feeling like hands landing softly on your shoulders,

a knowing that you were held,

watched,

protected.

She cared deeply for her whānau.

Back then, phone calls were too expensive and letters, though frequent, took days or weeks to cross oceans.
But prayers? Prayers were her emails, instant, direct, carried on te hā from Kimihia out into the world.

Her thoughts, hopes, concerns and love travelled effortlessly across waters and skies, reaching her children in Tāmaki and her siblings in Australia.

Her prayers were her way of staying connected, of communicating, of nurturing her people from afar.

Over time, I’ve come to understand that thoughts, prayers, and incantations create structure in the unseen.

They form a kind of scaffold in the veil, something like invisible armour that keeps the warmth we need inside us, and repels the coldness of the world.

Courage - The true catalyst for change

In these economy times, I have been trying to work out the most effective ways for our pakihi and surrounding lives to generate abundance for our whānau.

After much thought, I realised that it is not abundance that we want to walk through the door, but instead the catalyst of courage that needs to be with us as we take the next steps.

The courage to ask the hard questions.
The courage to step into the room.
The courage to know when to stop.
The courage to trust what you already know.

I am beginning to feel that abundance is not something we manifest as much as something that follows courage.

It is courage that aligns us with the people, places, and opportunities meant for us.

It is courage that helps us steer clear of the energies that deplete us.

And it is courage that helps us care enough to know the difference.

There is courage in defining what is hard and choosing to work with it.

And there is courage in recognising what is harmful and knowing when it will lead to dis-ease.

When I look at how courage is understood through Te Ao Māori, I am drawn to the meanings of capability, bravery, confidence, and spirit.

To have courage is to be capable.
To be brave.
To stand with confidence.
To carry and know your wairua.

Courage already sees that you are a winner before the outcome is known.

So now I find myself looking towards courage, rather than abundance, as the catalyst for change within my life.

Because without courage, nothing else can form.
