Carat is WEIGHT, not size. And this distinction can save you thousands.

Here's what affects how large a diamond looks:

CUT - A well-proportioned cut spreads weight across the top of the stone (the part you see). A deep cut hides weight in the base.

SHAPE - Oval, marquise, and pear cuts tend to look larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight because of their elongated shape.

SETTING - A halo setting, for example, can make a 1ct diamond look like 1.5ct+

1️⃣ Borrow one of their existing rings and trace the inside onto paper
2️⃣ Ask their best friend or family member - they often know!
3️⃣ If they wear a ring on their right hand, that's usually the same size as the left
4️⃣ Pay attention to comments they make about jewellery
5️⃣ Come in for a 'hypothetical' ring conversation - We will be very discreet 😉

The 4 Cs - Cut, Colour, Clarity & Carat - are the universal language of diamonds. But most people only focus on one (carat weight).

Here's what matters:

CUT - This is the most important. A well-cut diamond will sparkle far more than a larger, poorly cut one.

COLOUR - Graded D (colourless) to Z (yellow tint). Most people can't tell the difference between D and G with the naked eye.

CLARITY - Refers to natural inclusions. A VS1 or VS2 stone looks flawless to the eye and costs significantly less than Flawless.

CARAT - Weight, not size. Two diamonds can weigh the same but look very different depending on their cut.

Understanding the 4 Cs means you spend your budget where it matters most.
