Today I want to share about this piece because there is an amazing woman behind it.
The Relato necklace got to my hands after I met Icha Vizcarra. Icha is a Chilean artist and silversmith I had the honour to meet during our trip to Chile last year.
I saw her work for the first tiem at a museum shop. Then, after I began to follow her on social media, I find out she was going to be part of Joya Chilena, a show of 60 renowned jewellery makers. I tried my best to get to talk to her, but if you remember the saga, I was incredibly unwell back then so I only lasted 4 hrs at the show.
Lucky for me, and after a few online exchanges, Icha invited me to her home to visit her, have a cuppa and a chat, and see her studio.
And what an honour that was!
I learnt about her beginnings in jewellery making and silversmithing, and how she started exploring the textiles thanks to her own family history: a family business that made high quality socks, gave her access to materials she never thought of.
She then explored and investigated the Witral, the Mapuche loom and weaving techniques, and her journey took shape in between linen, cotton, copper and silver.
Within the Pre-Columbian cultures, weaving was an essential way of counting and storytelling. And the Mapuche tradition in the south of Chile and Argentina, sustained a practiced where every knot, every binding, kept and hold something: the designs and stories the textile tell.
Her exploration is tremendous and so fruitful. I fell in love with her long wearable pieces, and her sober yet powerful aesthetics.

The Relato (Tale) necklace is a tribute to all Pre-Columbian cultures and their ancestral techniques and wisdom.
Is delicate, light, and long enough you can wear it in multiple ways.
It feels so soothing in your hands, like if you could just play with it while you think, passing it through your fingers, stopping at every copper bind, and pause.
