When a stone costs €5 per carat but shows 8 different metals in its surface coating — that's not a coincidence. That's engineering.

We analysed a series of surface-coated synthetic moissanites using UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy and EDXRF.

The results revealed a sophisticated knowledge of plasma deposition that goes well beyond standard gem treatments.

Labradorite needs no help to be beautiful. Or so you'd think.

Yet treated cabochons are circulating on the market — and our gemologists have identified two very distinct types of treatment: a physical vapour deposition of titanium, detected by EDXRF analysis, and acrylic paint applied directly onto the stone, revealed by infrared spectroscopy. Soluble in acetone.

One is a technical feat. The other is, quite literally, paint.

Both deserve to be disclosed.

Our article, published in Gemmes — Gemmologie & Francophonie, N°4, explores these treatments in depth: their analytical signatures, and what they mean for the ornamental stone market.

A 3.09 ct natural yellow diamond. A colour that takes more than a glance to understand.

Behind every fancy diamond lies one essential question: is this hue the result of nature, or the mark of a laboratory treatment? It is one of the most complex assessments in modern gemmology — and one of the most consequential for a stone's value.

At GGTL Laboratories Geneva, we issue grading and testing reports for fancy diamonds of every hue — yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, red, and beyond. Each report details colour authenticity, colour origin, and any clarity treatment, in compliance with the highest international standards.
Because a beautiful stone deserves a truth as precise as its light.

A diamond… with a surprise inside 💎

What looked like a classic inclusion turned into a fascinating gemological puzzle.

A vivid orange cluster, perfectly trapped within the stone, pointed at first to spessartine — until science said otherwise.

Because in gemology, what you see isn’t always what you get. Raman spectra can guide you… but they don’t tell the whole story.

This rare inclusion is most likely an orange pyrope-almandine garnet — a reminder that nature doesn’t follow simple rules.

When chemistry, geology, and light collide, every stone becomes a mystery to solve.
