Meet Wendy Appelbaum — daughter of Sir Donald Gordon, founder of the Liberty Group, one of South Africa's biggest financial services companies. She didn't need to build anything else.

She bought a struggling Stellenbosch wine farm in 2003 anyway, and turned De Morgenzon into one of the world's top 100 wineries — twice, according to Wine & Spirits magazine. Then she did it again with her own money: $23 million donated to found the Gordon Institute of Business Science and the Donald Gordon Medical Centre, plus an ongoing foundation funding women's health and education across South Africa.
