Every so often, a magnificent medal is lodged with us for sale. This is a perfect antique ABO medal with its original ribbon issued to Burger P H van Rooyen, no scratches or rim knocks, carefully preserved by four generations of this Afrikaner family in a leather pouch. It needs a new home.

It was deeply satisfying to finally assemble the 6 medal set of South African WW2 soldier, 180210 B.A. (Bok) Van Blerk, which came to me in a sad state, using only two new ribbons and sourcing four vintage ribbons appropriate to each medal. I hope the descendants can be found. Salute! Lance

One of my favorite details on a coin ring are the ridges on the edge of the band.
In the coin world, this is called the Reeded Edge. While it adds an incredible industrial, gear-like texture to the finished ring, it wasn't designed for looks. It was designed to stop thieves.
Centuries ago, scammers would "clip" or shave small amounts of gold and silver off the smooth edges of coins to steal the precious metal before passing the coin on. To stop this, mints began adding these reeds (grooves). If a coin didn't have its ridges, you knew instantly it had been tampered with.
On a ring, this historic security feature acts as a perfect, rugged border that frames the Saint-Gaudens design. It feels substantial to the touch and catches the light in a completely different way than the smooth inner band.

Every so often the most extraordinary medals come our way. This is a Victorian sterling silver Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in pristine condition. Issued to Captain John Alchin of the Cape Town Irish Volunteer Rifles.

The Cape Town Irish Volunteer Rifles were a significant Irish-descended militia formed in Cape Town in 1885, responding to potential war with Russia, and by 1886, it had three companies. It was eventually absorbed into the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles as 'H' (Irish) Company in 1891, one of Cape Town's oldest regiments, marking an early indigenous Irish military presence in South Africa and a precursor to later units like The South African Irish Regiment.

It was an all-Irish or Irish-descent unit, the first of its kind in South Africa. Legacy: The unit is considered the first predecessor of The South African Irish Regiment, establishing an ethnic Irish military tradition in the colony.
