South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie made has responded to widespread reports of Africans expressing their support for Mexico during Bafana Bafana's opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against co-hosts Mexico on June 11 in Mexico City, where South Africa lost 2-0.

South Africa has faced rising anti-illegal immigrant protests and unrest in recent weeks and months. Thousands of protesters across the country are calling for action against undocumented migrants mostly from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique. Protesters set a June 30 deadline for undocumented foreigners to leave.

Many fans across Africa, especially online from Nigeria and Ghana, openly supported Mexico against Bafana Bafana as a form of protest. McKenzie's quote pushes back by saying South Africa had zero expectations of automatic continental support.

Since most African nations did not qualify for the World Cup, their fans are free to support any team. It frames the criticism as irrelevant to the on-pitch result and dismisses the linkage to the immigration protests.

Ronwen Williams said Africans cheered for Mexico ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ against South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ and his team were on the verge of tears. He is not wrong to feel that way. But he knows why.

After Bafana Bafanaโ€™s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the World Cup opener, Williams said: โ€œAfricans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I cannot figure out why our own case was different. Many Africans supported Mexico instead of us. We almost shed tears because we expected Africa to stand with us.โ€ ๏ฟผ

The pain in those words is real. Ronwen Williams is a proud African. He led his country back to the World Cup stage for the first time in 16 years. He wrote an open letter to his nation before kickoff titled Sibuyile. We are back. He carried his late brotherโ€™s memory onto that pitch. He deserved a continent behind him.

Speaking in a recent interview, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, addressed Nigeriaโ€™s ongoing security challenges.

According to him, the current state of insecurity in Nigeria requires divine intervention and collective unity.

"Only God can bring a complete end to insecurity, alongside our collective prayers, support and determination. This is not a problem that should be politicised," he said, adding further that:

"It is painful, and we must all unite to ensure that security agencies and citizens work together to defeat insecurity. It affects everyone, regardless of political party or religion."

His comments follow mounting pressure from Nigerian youth demanding the release of many people abducted by bandits in recent times.

What are your thoughts on his position?
