Savage Jewellery is a small business and we are about slow fashion and sustainability. I source my metal from reliable sources, with it being 95% recycled. Packaging I make from materials that can be recycled and while I am by no means perfect, I try to be as sustainable as I can be.

There is a lead time to the pieces on the website because they are crafted to order. It is not feasible to stock every piece in all the ranges and in every size ready to ship (like mass retailers).

The true advantage of buying from a small business is how we can customise items for you. We are also able to offer a unique custom made piece specially for you.

Throwback! I was sorting through some studio things this past week and came across these photos, (yes actual photos) of some of my fourth year final pieces.

I was exploring the intrinsic value of materials and worked with industrial rubber. I loved that you could take this utilitarian material and make it into something completely different as well as create a whole different value for it.

The top photo is of a necklace and the bottom one shows knitted bangles. The photo peaking through in the background is of bangles made from aluminium and rubber.

Hiya. I’m Nicky, the founder and designer behind Savage Jewellery. I thought I’d share a little bit about how I got here.

My journey started at art school, where I studied Fine Art. I was completely confused about what I wanted to do; the one thing I did know was that I didn’t want to be a fine artist. So, off to the UK I went on a working visa to get some life experience.

While doing very boring admin jobs, I realised something important: I needed to learn how to make jewellery. One day, while looking at the Central Saint Martins end-of-year exhibitions, I reached the jewellery section, turned to my friend Lucy, and said, “I need to know how to do this”
I returned to Durban, South Africa, and began my jewellery-making journey. I put myself through three years of jewellery school - walking to class in the mornings and catching the bus home because I could only afford one way.

After that, I worked on the bench and did sales in a jewellery shop. It quickly became clear that designing and creating were what I truly loved, so it was back to tech for my fourth year. During this time, I ran a market stall for the jewellery department and really cut my teeth in designing, making, and selling my own work.
The next obvious step? Savage Jewellery.

What I do know is that I absolutely love creating pieces for you to adorn yourself with, and it still gives me the warmest feeling when I spot someone wearing one of my designs.

I would love to know whether you are someone who changes your jewellery every day, or whether you stick to a few favourite pieces for a while?
I definitely fall into a jewellery “uniform” for a couple of months before switching it up.

Are you wondering what to do with all the old jewellery you no longer wear or is broken.

Why not get custom piece made that still holds the memories from the old pieces but in a new form.

We did custom piece for Ali - using the peridot and pearl from some old earrings she no longer wears (I think the one pair belonged to her mum).

We dismantled the earrings - unglued the pearl, cut the peridot out of the original earring and used the gold to create a new pendant that she can wear everyday (this is according to Ali as she never takes it off)
