Vietnam's handicraft export surges 42.5 pct in 5 months 2019.

HANOI -- Vietnam earned $190 million from exporting handicraft products made from rattan, bamboo, sedge or wool in the first five months of this year, up 42.5 percent against the same period last year, a local association said on Wednesday.

Due to increasingly high demands from major markets such as the European Union, the United States and Japan and from emerging or potential markets including Russia, India and Thailand, Vietnam's handicraft export can reach $500 million in 2019, predicted the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City.

In May alone, Vietnam's handicraft export surged 49.6 percent on-year to $45 million.

More and more foreign people, especially retirees are buying Vietnamese handicrafts to decorate their houses or use them as gifts for relatives and friends, the association said.

New trends in the EU for home decor & textiles

The Social Context Is Changing. There are four main reasons for these changes.

First, the higher educational level of girls as well as boys will result in more ‘female products’, a growing middle class and the greater importance of CSR and equity (fairness). Second, ageing of the population leads to smaller households, more specific needs for home textiles, for example in comfort, size or functionality and more B-to-B opportunities (contract markets). Third, , urbanization, like the ageing of population, will result in more smaller households, a diversity in styles and a rising number of immigrants. Last, the spread of Internet and social media will result in a growing need for foreign or overseas products, but also for more convenient and comfortable products because of a busier style of life in the information age.

These reasons have consequences and effects on the market for home decoration and textiles, such as increasing demand for smaller products because of smaller households, diversification of products because of urbanization and more organic products because of the changing social context. For a Vietnamese exporter, these changes in demand will create new export opportunities.

Climate Change

Finally, climate change is an important new trend. The first main reason for adapting products to climate change is the ecological footprint. Ecological footprints will become more demanding on the ecosystems, which will result in the reduction of unnecessary transport movements and the increase of the usage of local products. To produce local, to sell local will be increasingly regarded as the alternative. Consumers in Europe are focussing on eco-friendly products. Certifications, labelling concerning countries of origin and eco-labeling will be essential attributes of a product.. Labelling and certification schemes such as the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), CE (European Conformity) and European Eco-label will enhance the credibility of exported products and make counterfeiting more difficult.

The second reason for adapting products to European requirements is the growing energy shortage. As energy sources become scarcer and less able to match the bigger needs of industrialization, there will be consequences on national and international regulations. Exporters should follow developments in EU environmental regulations by accessing CBI (Dutch Centre for the promotion of imports from developing countries) website www.cbi.eu/market info. CBI can also be contacted for assistance on the EU legislation in the home decoration and textile sector. Similarly, making the production process more efficient through innovation may also help Vietnamese exporters to adapt to this change.

The last reason for adapting products to European market trends is the need for more comfort by the consumers. The consequences of climate change will have an impact on the weather and this will have an impact on the level of comfort in home and furnishing textiles. You can adapt to this change by, for example, using recyclable material or consider innovating.

Changes in the world handicraft market.
The global market for home accessories is estimated to be at least US$ 100 billion according to a study done by US Aid on the “Global Market Assessment for Handicrafts”. The United States of America remains the largest importer of the home accessories with a total value of US$ 67 billion. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States market has a strong desire for the unique, the interesting, and products with a history. However, the US market is very price sensitive, and hence the price per unit realized in this market tends to be lower than in other countries. Nevertheless, the US remains traditionally a strong market, and continues to grow, fuelled by multiethnic immigration.

Crafts are part of a much larger home accessory market, which includes handcrafted, semi-handcrafted, and machine-made goods. This market is strongly influenced by fashion trends, consumer purchasing patterns, and economic conditions in the end markets. The growth of international markets for Home accessories, and an increased interest in ‘global’ goods, sustainability, social and environmental awareness have opened up new market opportunities for artisans and handmade, handcrafted products. However, although the market is slightly growing, changes in the world market have affected the opportunities for Vietnamese crafts in the international marketplace, which can be broadly summarised as follows:

The flood of less expensive goods from China in the market.
Changes in legislation/certification processes affecting export/sale of certain product groups.
Financial crisis resulting on a downward pressure on price points and reduced capacity of importers to take stock risk.
Need within markets for more streamlined cost-effective buying practices
The rise of retail direct-import buying practices.
Negative perceptions about process, communication, services, amongst some international buyers.
International travel concerns generally.
High competition in the sector internationally.
Relatively complex supply chain compared to competitor sectors and growing concern amongst importers/consumers regarding supply chain management/costs and sustainability (fair trade/environmental) issues.
Lack of conduit and coordinated approach to a sector to meet market needs, build the capacity of artisans and realize market potential through clearly developed promotional plans appropriate to specific segments.
Low level technology, and lack of new technical innovations in the craft production area.
