From Our Desert to Your Home: Stay Safe This Holiday Season!
Hey, Joshua Tree 925 family!
The holidays are sparkling brightly, a time for giving unique gifts, celebrating cherished moments, and spreading that wonderful desert cheer. At Joshua Tree 925, we want your season to be filled with joy, not stress. Unfortunately, while we're all busy making spirits bright, scammers are out there hoping to steal a little of your peace this season.
We've put together a guide to the most common holiday scams, along with our top tips, to help you keep your holidays merry, bright, and secure!
1. The "Generous" Imposter: Charity Scams
The spirit of giving truly blossoms during the holidays, and scammers are quick to take advantage of that generosity. They often pose as legitimate charities, sometimes even creating convincing fake ones. While your heart might be open, keep your guard up!
Our Tip from the Trees: Before you donate, do a quick check. Research the charity through official websites like Charity Navigator or GuideStar to ensure they are legitimate. Never feel pressured to give on the spot.
2. The Deceptive Delivery: Fake Shipping Alerts
Excited about your holiday packages arriving? Scammers are just as eager, but for all the wrong reasons. They send fake text or email shipping messages that look exactly like the real thing, designed to trick you into sharing your personal information.
Our Tip from the Trees: Don't click any links or open attachments from unexpected shipping notifications. The safest way to track your packages is always through the retailer's or shipper's official website, which you access by typing their known address directly into your browser.
3. The Irreversible Trick: Gift Card Payment Scams
Gift cards make fantastic gifts for friends and family, but they are absolutely not a safe way to pay anyone you don't know well. If someone—whether claiming to be a business, a government agency, or a charity—asks you to pay with a gift card, it's a scam. Real, legitimate businesses and charities will never request payment this way.
Our Tip from the Trees: Be extra cautious, especially with any online purchases or requests for payment. Always avoid paying with irreversible methods like cash, wire transfers, Zelle®, or gift cards, as it's almost impossible to get your money back if it turns out to be a scam.
From all of us at Joshua Tree 925, we wish you a safe, happy, and scam-free holiday season! May your days be filled with peace, nature's beauty, and gratitude.
