Our founder, Zenaida Perez (Daniel’s Grandmother), passed away peacefully at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, determination, faith, and an unwavering belief in the promise of a better future.
Born in Cuba, Zenaida built a life rooted in love, family, and community. With her husband, Higinio, by her side, she created a home, welcomed a family, and embraced a vibrant community she came to cherish.
In 1962, she fled communist Cuba and came to the United States in search of freedom and opportunity. Leaving behind nearly everything she knew, she arrived with little more than determination, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.
Never content to simply accept the limits of her circumstances, Zenaida met challenges with courage and an entrepreneurial spirit. Her willingness to take risks became the foundation for one of her greatest achievements: the founding of Onyx in 1970.
What began as a dream grew into a lasting part of the community. Though the store has evolved with the times, the spirit behind it remains unchanged—a testament to Zenaida’s vision, perseverance, and belief that hard work, kindness, and dedication could create something meaningful.
Her story embodied the American dream—not because success came easily, but because she earned it through sacrifice, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to building a better life.
