Our jewelry inventory is getting a little more colorful! We've been adding some beautiful new pieces to our collection, and these four are particularly interesting.

First up is a beautiful watermelon tourmaline pendant. One of nature's more entertaining creations, watermelon tourmaline gets its name from the distinct pink and green color zoning that can occur within a single crystal. This elongated stone shows a wonderful transition from soft green into rosy pink, almost like a little slice of summer captured in a gemstone.

Next we have a heart-shaped Australian opal pendant displaying vivid blues and greens that seem to dance across the stone. Opal is one of those gemstones that really needs to be seen in motion. The shifting colors can look almost like sunlight dancing through tropical ocean water.

Then there's a pair of blue opal inlay and pearl earrings. The intense electric-blue play-of-color in the opals is a wonderful contrast against the soft white luster of the pearls and warm yellow gold. A really nice combination of color and texture!

And finally, a lovely pink tourmaline pendant with an unusual fan-shaped cut. The soft rosy color and geometric faceting give this piece a distinctive look without needing an elaborate setting.

Four very different pieces, each with its own personality. That's one of the things I enjoy most about colored gemstones — nature has an almost endless variety of colors and patterns to work with, and no two are ever quite alike.

A custom solitaire engagement ring we just finished making here at Vintage Jewelers, with a few interesting details that make this one a little different from your traditional solitaire.

The center is a 3 carat, elongated oval, step-cut lab-grown diamond, E color and VVS2 clarity. Unlike a traditional brilliant cut, which produces lots of smaller flashes of light, step cuts tend to produce broader, more dramatic reflections through the stone. It's a beautiful look, particularly in this elongated shape.

We made the tapered, comfort-fit shank in 14 karat yellow gold, with a hand-hammered satin finish. I particularly like how this texture brings out the warmth of the yellow gold, giving the ring a slightly rustic, hand-crafted appearance. It's a nice contrast against the bright, clean lines of the diamond.

For the setting, we used our 95% platinum hard alloy, with four delicate talon-shaped prongs. The white platinum helps preserve the diamond's colorless appearance, while the tapered prongs keep the setting refined without distracting from the stone.

One of the more interesting parts of this project is that the entire ring was designed in CAD right here in our shop. Before we made anything, our client was able to see and approve an interactive 3D rendering of their ring, right down to the proportions, setting, and overall design.

An exceptional example of something that's becoming increasingly difficult to find — antique Australian opal bead necklaces.

We have two beautiful graduated strands of natural white opal from Coober Pedy, Australia. One features 69 beads measuring up to 13.5mm, while the other has 55 beads with the largest measuring 14.5mm. Both display beautiful play-of-color, with flashes of greens, blues, oranges, and reds moving across the beads as the light changes.

What makes these particularly interesting is their age and condition. Opal can develop a network of fine fractures over time, known as crazing. Neither of these antique strands shows any evidence of crazing, which is exceptional considering their age.

Australian opal bead material of this quality is becoming extremely difficult to source, with very little comparable material currently coming onto the market. Finding nicely matched, graduated strands like these is becoming increasingly challenging.

Both necklaces feature six 14 karat gold diamond-set rondel spacers, with approximately 1.08 carats of natural diamonds in each necklace. One strand is finished with an Art Deco diamond-set clasp, while the other features a 14 karat gold clasp. We've also had both strands professionally restrung on new silk, individually knotted between each bead.

Two very fine examples of antique Australian opal jewelry, and pieces that would be difficult to replace in today's market. More information in the comments below ⬇

October gets two birthstones, and they're about as different from one another as gemstones can be. Opal and Tourmaline. One puts on a spectacular light show, while the other seems determined to come in just about every color imaginable.

Opal is one of those gemstones that photographs never quite do justice. Its play-of-color can produce flashes of brilliant greens, blues, oranges, and reds that seem to dance across the surface as the stone moves. Some resemble tiny galaxies filled with colorful stars, while others have broad flashes of color that appear almost like the Northern Lights. Nature really outdid itself with this one.

Tourmaline has an entirely different kind of magic. Few gemstones offer such an extraordinary range of colors, from delicate pinks and vivid greens to beautiful ocean blues. Some crystals even contain multiple colors, like watermelon tourmaline, with its pink center surrounded by green. It's almost as if nature couldn't decide on just one color, so it chose several!

For me, that's what makes these two such a wonderful pairing for October. Opal captures the mystery and changing light of autumn, while tourmaline brings all the warmth, color, and personality of the season. Two completely different gemstones, each with its own little bit of magic.

A watch dial shouldn't do this....

This watch came in with the entire dial spinning inside the case. Definitely not part of the design.

Our diagnosis: the watch dial feet had likely broken off. We disassembled the watch, removed the broken feet still lodged in the movement, and carefully repositioned them on the back of the dial.

Using our laser welder, we welded the original dial feet back into place with extreme precision using a 0.3 mm laser beam width. The laser welder keeps the heat extremely localized, which is especially important when working this close to a finished watch dial.

After reassembly, everything is back where it belongs and the dial is securely back in place.
