Rescued and restored makita beam saw. I think 1980s vintage. Lots of big cast parts and the only plastic is in the switch. Takes a 16” blade.

I tore it down to every last screw, stripped, painted, replaced bearings, motor brushes,lubricated gearbox, replaced the cord… and I’m sure a few more things.

Poor thing wouldn’t run and was full of sheet rock dust when I found it.

Been slow to post content these past few months. Life’s been busy and curveballs have been many. Projects have been plodding along. This one is nearing the light at the end of the tunnel. Just finishing applying rolled insulation this weekend, getting ready to put the inner sheathing on, mount fans, and mount solar panels. Then it’s complete! This project started as a COVID project and I really thought it would be just a few weekends. A couple years later, we are almost there.

Trying out some 0.75” raised print to reproduce the jointer door. Using a 3/8 bit to rough it and a 3/32 bit to do the small pieces. Had both kids on the shop “helping” this morning so pardon the glaring mistakes lol. Pretty happy this far— cut time is about 25 mins and didn’t break the tiny bit! Goals amiright?

Finally finished milling that beech log and got it stickered. Well… finished is maybe not the right word. Going to try something new here and resaw the 6” slabs into 3x6s and restack. Should yield some nice lumber. Currently shopping for a beam saw based on some guidance from professionals in this space. Moving those 6” thick slabs is a chore!! But man is it nice to have a new chainsaw—-and mill a tree without any nails in it. Hoping to make a workbench from this if it dries ok.

I’ve learned to remove tags and reattach after masking. Not in love with the zip screws but the pinned nails were tricky on this one. Lightly cleaned up the tag with some oil and scotch brite. PO got some paint on it but we will just that a battle scar.

I do like this paint though. Although it seems to be impossible to get right now.

There are a dozen ways to try to remove the bearings from inside the pulley for a Buffalo forge drill press and they are all terrible.

My method is to drill two holes through the top of the pulley and tap the bearings out. I call it a design for service improvement.

Not a bad day to turn 37. Best weather of the year, dropped a little tree with a good friend, and had a wonderful dinner, early campfire and some homemade Whoopie pie cake courtesy of my amazing wife.

The tree is 30” x 120 feet. Cleared the area out and dropped it right in the clearing. The new saw is amazing. Def worth the wait. Gonna get the mill set up on it in coming weeks stay tuned.

Parts are getting there. Bee. Chipping away at this drill press in the background for a while now. Paint came out nice and so did the column. Gonna be great to peel back the masking tape and expose some of the surfaces.

Turns out “hoover” bought Kingston Conley electric who also made motors for walker turner for many years. See the resemblance? I knew it was too nice for a vacuum. Gonna be great for the Buffalo no 15 drillpress once I get it adapted up.

Bandsaw carnage!

Snapped a blade. It was pretty new and it snapped right on the weld which is a little suspicious.

The stringy saw dust is from cutting birch bowl blanks. Had no idea how much was left behind.

Loving this new contour gage from saker. Needed a way to transfer the 18” long contoured surface to some red oak. Tried a few things and eventually gave up and ordered this set. The lock together and the position locks also. Made quick work of this!

Working on mounting the giant 5HP motor to the jointer. Trying to tuck it up under the infeed table. The wood is cut to the contours of the casting now so I can make the motor to a flat surface.

The machine came with this nasty looking motor mount. Didn’t think I was going to use it but after cleaning it up it looks really well made.
