Open Sea Design Co. Open Sea is a creative boutique in Brooklyn, NY. Open Sea is a creative design studio based in Brooklyn, that helps build brands from the ground up.

We specialize in branding, packaging, print collateral, and website design. In 2017, we launched Open Sea's first and very own line of stationery. We decided to create a line that showcased some of the things we love the most: flowers, the ocean, type, and beautiful old (and slightly esoteric) things. Things that inspire us daily, and fill our spaces and lives with beauty. Our intention with Open Sea Fine Paper Goods is to do just that: add a little more beauty to your life.

Hi, it’s me. Wondering the halls of my haunted castle. And by castle I mean Brooklyn apartment. Earlier this year I had the absolute pleasure of working with the incredible Courtney .

I hate getting my picture taken, but the time to get proper portraits taken had come, and I decided that the only way to do it was to go full damsel. And no one does castle/fantasy/goth quite like The Light Witch.

🇲🇽Today is Mexican Independence Day. 🇲🇽My country may be imperfect, but it is rich in culture, spirit, and people. Even though I’ve lived in the US for many years now, my bond to Mexico continues to run deep. Not just because I go often to visit my family, but if you look close, you’ll find bits and pieces of Mexican folklore, history and magic in the work of Open Sea. It’s also why I named my company Open Sea: after the healing, turquoise blue waters of my hometown of Cancun.

And living in NYC, a city that runs on the hard work of immigrants, I never feel too far from home. And I’m grateful to live in a city that cares for and values its immigrant population.

Que viva Mexico!

This new collection is a bit of everything we love at Open Sea: spiritualism, botanical prints, 14th century alphabets, books, and skulls. We’ve always got to sneak in a skull.

Our brand new black oval folded cards, feature two iconic fortune telling tools: the crystal ball, and the original planchette. We’ve also redesigned and updated our original A7 botanical ovals, and created a sweet ode to the magic of books. Two brand new occasion cards have loving sentiments set 14th century lettering, framed with delicate florals.

Our Calaveras prints are a tribute to Mexican Day of the Dead sugar skulls 🖤💀🖤 Each calavera is encircled by an ornate silver foil frame and decorated with colorful blooms.

Calaveras are small molded skulls made out of cane sugar, typically used during the Mexican Day of the Day as altar decorations meant to represent our passed loved ones.
 
Their history dates back to pre-hispanic times. The people of Mesoamerica saw death as another cycle in a person’s journey of life, not as final and eternal judgment. It was common practice to use the skulls of passed loved ones in death rituals, as well as in the Tzompantli, which were large racks used to display the skulls of war captives and sacrificial victims. 
 
But these practices were forbidden after 1519 when the Spanish arrived on the shores of Mexico and began brutally imposing Catholicism. As is so often the case, the indigenous people found ways to incorporate their old traditions to their new ones. Usually in more palatable ways. 
 
It is thought that the calaveras themselves are based on the Spanish tradition of alfeñiques, which are molded candy made with sugar.

“There are four elements, and they are the primary foundation of all corporeal things: fire, earth, water, and air. All inferior bodies are composed from these elements, not by heaping them together, but by transmutation and union. Then, when corrupted, they are dissolved into elements.

However, none of the sensible elements are pure, but are more or less mixed, and are transmuted into each other, just as earth is dissolved into mud in water and then hardens and thickens with earth. Earlier this year we had the pleasure to collaborate with .archive and on graphics for the FW22 collection 🖤 The collection also includes artwork by and 🖤 And it’s finally online on the .archive website!

It’s quite the departure for us, but it felt right. .archive is a fellow woman (and Hispanic!) owned business, and their deconstructed Victorian aesthetic tugged at our heart strings right away. 🖤 We will eventually offer a few select pieces on our website, but the entire collection is available on the .archive website 🖤.
