A unique, special order watch from is something most collectors dream about; finding a unique example of one the most sought after Grand Complicatio references is the kind of rarity that rewrites a collection. Watches like this typically go in to private collections for generations, never to be seen again, making this a once in a lifetime opportunity.

This Calatrava Ref. 448 was produced in 1929, at the very moment the world slipped into the Great Depression — a period that would reshape economies, industries, and personal fortunes. This watch remained unsold for eight years, finally leaving the retailer in 1937. This timeline is reflective of its time — caught between uncertainty and eventual recovery.

That moment of sale brings us to Paul L. Mullaney of Chicago, whose name remains engraved on the caseback. Through historical records, a fuller picture emerges: a Northwestern graduate in 1929, later a civic leader deeply involved in organizations such as the Travelers Aid Society, the Chicago Hearing Society, and Catholic Charities. The timing feels anything but coincidental — produced the year he graduated, sold just before the founding of his investment firm. This was not simply a purchase, but likely a marker of transition into professional life.

Even without the backstory, this is a special watch. A compact yellow gold Calatrava, defined by its early sector dial — one of the most sought after variations of any Calatrava reference. The 448 is regarded as the little brother to the reference 96 - with the same design in a smaller case.

Few watches carry a timeline so intact. Fewer still tie so closely to a life that can still be traced.

This special little watch is available with a recent archive .

This Tank Obus Savonette from the 1930s hides in plain sight — its hinged yellow gold cover released by a subtle squeeze of the lugs, revealing a classic Cartier dial with Roman numerals, rail track and blued steel hands. This Obus case, with its distinctive rounded cabochon lugs, feels architectural yet soft, while the woven gold and leather bracelet pushes the piece firmly into the realm of jewelry as much as watchmaking. Savonette wristwatches are rare for Cartier — especially in this configuration — and speak to a period where form and function were approached with equal imagination.
