For the first time we're making candle filters in a mold. The casting is done using a moist clay composition, of ~25% water. Shown at left are candles from the side and the bottom, as well as the plaster model at right. Behind these is the two piecemol

Hey Mark, Thanks for the discussion topic on the packed bed systems, and the pictures. Can you write some descriptions of what it is that we're looking at? R

Hey, please checkout the topic for discussion, as per the tab: "Can a new design for ceramic filters be taken seriously, if there is neither discussion, nor disclosure on the parameters of production? For example: What’s the overall design? What’s

In the processes of drying and firing, the clay loses ~12% of its volume, pulling away from the grog. This leaves passages for the flow of the contaminated water, bearing in mind that silver is situated along the way. Note that I should credit our profe

I want to explain a simple clay composition for jiggered candles, and maybe for extrusion. This is roughly half grog, consisting of granules that are within a close range to 2.5 mms., where the candle wall thickness is 25 mms. By placing the grog granul

Now I've entered three scans of pages, from a 2006 exhibition at the Smithsonian, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, entititled, "Design for the Other 90%." Pages 88 and 89 are those of my partner, International Development Enterprises, and the label of the candle filter is on pg. 89 (with the caption on pg. 88)

The sectional drawing shown is for a jiggered candle filter, 4.5 ins. diameter by 5.5 ins. height, with a 1.0 wall thickness. The wall thickness allows for an overall bulk that will give enough 'residence time,' that period of sustained contact between the E coli and the silver. Jiggering is a good option, since the seams, where pathogens can get through to the filtered water, are minimized.

The sectional drawing shown indicates a jiggered candle filter, in two pieces, and a virtue of this is that it has only one interface, which is between the two parts. By contrast an extruded candle may have five seams; two for the end caps, and three, where the center die of the jigger cut the clay, prior to constriction and re-healing. (Sorry that this is a bit esoteric, like ceramic-speak.)

This should allow downloading of a very thorough study on our candle filters (of 18 mB). Bye for now.
