🔥NEW FIRESIDE STORIES | with Matt

What would you give to hear someone you love sing your childhood lullaby one more time? 🎶

In today’s Fireside Stories with Matt, a photo of his childhood home brings back memories of learning Portuguese, and a song he still remembers decades later.

At four or five, Matt helped translate for his parents. These days, he jokes that his most useful phrase is “I don’t speak Portuguese.” 😂 But he can still sing that lullaby.

So he recorded it and saved it in an Artifct for his kids. He says it’s so they can laugh someday. We suspect they’ll love hearing Dad’s voice just as much.

An old photograph is a wonderful place to start. Add your voice and the story behind it, and you give your family even more to hold onto. 💛

You know why you’ve kept it. Will your family? 💛

The handwritten recipe. The box of family photos. The necklace that belonged to your grandmother. Passing them down means sharing their stories, too.

On Spellife, hosts Jill and Kaynell welcome our Co-Founder Heather Nickerson, Rachel Donnelly of AfterLight, and Kristen Goodman of Clicking with Kristen for a conversation about what we leave behind, from meaningful keepsakes to the documents, passwords, and practical details our loved ones may someday need.

You don’t have to figure it all out today. Start with one object. Tell its story. Let someone know where to find what matters.

One small step can make things easier for the people you love.

Your family may know exactly where you keep the necklace, and still have no idea who you wanted to receive it.

That’s one small piece of the Great Stuff Transfer.

Boomers are expected to pass more than $3 trillion in tangible goods to Gen X over the next decade. Alongside those belongings are family stories, sentimental attachments, and wishes that may never have been written down.

When families are left to guess, even ordinary objects can become difficult decisions.

Our co-founder Heather experienced this while sorting through her mother’s estate: disagreements about what to keep, uncertainty about making the right choice, and meaningful items being parted with.

Estate planning is an opportunity to give your family more clarity.

With Artifcts’ “In the Future” feature, you can document what you hope happens to an item alongside its photos, history, and memories. You can also export your Artifcts to share with your estate planning attorney or advisor.

Start with three treasured things. Tell their stories. Record your wishes.

What’s one keepsake you want your children to know what to do with someday, and why? Tell us in the comments. 💬

I kept my grandfather’s gift. I wish I’d written down more of its story.

He was an antique collector, and he gave me this silverware so I’d have something to pass down through our family for generations.

Seven moves in eighteen years later, I still have the set, and one water-damaged piece of paper identifying it as Mary Chilton sterling silver by Towle, with the year 1912.

But why did he choose it? Did he simply love the set, or was there a connection to our family?

I’m using ARTIAssist in Artifcts, the Family History App, to research its history and explore what it might be worth online. Then I’m saving what I discover alongside the memories I already have.

For me, part of its value will always be knowing he chose it for us. 💚

If you think you'll ask about that family heirloom someday... think again.

Picture the grandfather clock that's been standing in your parents' or grandparents' home for as long as you can remember.

You've heard it chime a thousand times. You recognize every detail. You might even know exactly where you'd put it in your own home.

But here's what you might NOT know.

Where did it come from? Was it a wedding gift? Did someone save for years to buy it? Why was it important enough to keep all these years?

The object often lasts longer than the story.

And when the person who knows that story is no longer there to tell it, you may be left with a beautiful heirloom and a lot of unanswered questions.

The good news? You don't need hours of interviews or a complicated family history project.

Start with three simple questions:

🕰️ Where did this come from?

🕰️ Who gave it to you?

🕰️ Why did you keep it?

Then capture their answers, in their own words if you can.

With Artifcts, you can preserve the story alongside photos of the object and share it with the people who will treasure it next.

Don't wait until you're sorting through someone's belongings to wish you'd asked.

🔥 FIRESIDE STORIES | One Passport. A Lifetime of Stories.

What looks like an old, expired passport might actually hold the story of how an entire family’s future changed.

In 1971, a young boy left southern Georgia for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He learned Portuguese, experienced a new culture, and began a lifelong connection to the world beyond the United States.

Decades later, that experience has shaped not only his life but his children's lives, too.

And it all started with a little passport featuring a childhood photo. 📖

This Family History Month, we're sharing another Artifcts Fireside Story to remind you that family history isn't just about where you came from. It's about the experiences that made you who you are.

That first passport is now preserved in an Artifct, along with the memories and meaning behind it.

💬 What place or experience changed the course of your life? We'd love to hear your story!

What happens to family history when nobody wants the family heirlooms?

Maybe it's Grandma's china, your grandfather's watch, or the rocking chair that's been passed down for generations.

You remember the stories. The holiday dinners. The people who owned these things.

But will the next generation?

Here's something worth remembering: You can preserve your family's history without keeping every family heirloom.

Before an item is gifted, donated, sold, or passed along, take the opportunity to document its story.

Photograph the details, record what you remember, and invite family members to contribute their memories in an Artifct.

The item may eventually find a new home. Its history doesn't have to disappear with it. 💚

Our newest ARTIcle explores 3 Ways to Preserve Family History Before Passing on an Heirloom.

Have you ever held onto something for years because you just couldn't bring yourself to let it go?

Maybe it's a box of your children's old clothes, a quilt passed down from your grandmother, or a piece of furniture that's been in the family for generations.

You don't necessarily need it anymore, but the memories? Those are harder to part with. ❤️

Here's the good news: You don't have to keep the stuff to keep the story.

Whether you choose to pass something along, give it a creative second life, or finally let it go, there's a way to preserve what made it special in the first place.

In our recent ARTIcles collaboration, we're exploring three thoughtful ways to give meaningful belongings a new chapter, featuring inspiration from Little Curiosities- Hudson, MA and MemoryStitch.

💬 We'd love to hear from you: What's one sentimental item you've held onto because you weren't sure what to do with it?
