The answers to a few of our most asked questions on etched and oxidized rings!

1. Is the etched surface uncomfortable?

NO- etching is very shallow, you only feel it If you run your fingernail over the surface of the ring. It’s not something one can feel in every day wear- it’s not scratchy or rough. You can also ask for a light etch or a heavy etch- neither one is rough to the touch.

2. Will the oxidization wear off over time?

Possibly- the ox could wear off for stay put depending on the environment it’s in and your body’s chemistry. Swimming pools and hot tubs will naturally oxidize your ring. However highly acid environments will keep it shiny and wear away oxidizing.
The good news is that we offer a simple process that you can do at home to re-oxidize your ring.

3. Will the silver oxidize over time on a satin ring?

Possibly - tarnish is just a lighter version of oxidizing so the answer is the same as above- depending on the environment it’s in- the silver in your ring could stay shiny or oxidize, just like any silver ring. We offer information on how to polish and oxidize your ring at home and we also can do it for you at any time. We are here to help maintain the beauty and life of your jewelry.

4. Why don’t you offer a high polish finish?

Mokume’s various colors and metals and patterns are not as visible in a high polish. The reflected light obscures the beauty of the pattern and the color. Etching, and oxidizing deepen the contrast between layers, making them more graphic and visible. A Satin finish allows the eye to see what’s there rather than just seeing the shine of the metal.
