In Kilkenny 1324 Dame Alice Kyteler & her maidservant Petronilla de Meath were accused of witchcraft. Dame Alice was tortured & confessed but fled Ireland to escape. Petronilla was found guilty of heresy & was the first person in Ireland to be burned at the stake.

The Kilkenny witch trail was the first recorded case of witchcraft in Ireland…but not the last. Whilst being a witch was widely accepted in pagan Ireland, the indoctrination of christianity meant that many women were persecuted for being different, looking different, being unmarried, being outspoken, being independent or being a traditional healer…Heresy!

In old European folklore the witch finger or poison finger was seen as a spiritual weapon of concentrated magic potency. The simple act of pointing the index finger was believed to cast a malicious spell or curse. This symbolism has been carried through to modern day pop culture & modern esoteric imagery.

A warty, bony finger with long claw like nail is not visually appealing but it carries the story of becoming the hag. Cast in precious metal and decorated with an elaborate gemstone ring it becomes beautiful, valued, a talisman from our female ancestors reminding us to speak out & rebel against societal expectations. There is beauty in ugliness & power in unity.
