Two Toi et Moi rings finished just in time for Art in the High Desert in Bend, Oregon, this coming weekend. The yellow sapphire & moonstone combo is outside our usual color palette but I really love how they play off each other. Come see them in person!! We’re at booth 101 ✨

Another artifact pendant to 💗 This silver gilt piece was originally made as a decorative box top over a thousand years ago. A gorgeous little one inch diameter box! Can you imagine what somebody once used it for? Now it’s framed in granulated 22kt gold, accented with diamonds and ready to adorn somebody’s neck.

These 6th century Anglo-Saxon gilt bronze artifacts are wearable again. Lost, buried, and then found a millennia later by amateur metal detectorists in the UK. Originally they were a type of adornment called saucer brooches. The pin stems are long gone and now we’ve redesigned them into pendants to be worn for another generation.

Many of you know that we’ve been repurposing ancient bronze and silver artifacts into jewelry for years now. We source them from antiquities auction houses in the UK and focus primarily on Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Medieval European era pieces, avoiding Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Indo-European because of the high possibility of those pieces being looted. Instability, lack of government oversight and wars in North Africa and the Middle East have created a surge in the black market for those categories of artifact.

We do minimal alterations: gently cleaning them to remove dirt and then grinding off any sharp edges or rivets. Many of the pieces have rivets on the back as they were originally attached to clothing and leather goods this way.

For the first time this spring we finally!! acquired our first artifacts suitable for earrings: Viking-era silver mounts with a dot design. I photographed them with another new pendant: a Medieval-era heraldic mount with a bird design, specifically “Pelican in her piety” symbolizing devotion and self-sacrifice.

We’ve lost an incredible friend, fellow goldsmith (among many other talents) and passionate advocate for fine, artisan jewelry David Iler

He was the first new friend we made when we moved to Portland in 1996 and has been a constant presence in our life since. We’ll miss his generosity, curiosity and seemingly bottomless depth of knowledge as well as his willingness to take us complete newbies to his secret salmon fishing spot.

Love you Dave!
