This ring has been around since 1785.

Created during the Georgian era, this antique ring features a sepia-painted urn, a motif commonly found in mourning jewelry of the period. Mourning rings served as personal objects of remembrance, often incorporating imagery such as urns, weeping willows, tombs, and other neoclassical motifs associated with memorialization.

The miniature sepia scenes were painstakingly painted at an incredibly small scale, turning a piece of jewelry into something remarkably personal. More than two centuries later, this one is still here.

The metal choice here is almost as interesting as the stones.

These vintage earrings pair emeralds and diamonds with palladium, a naturally white precious metal. During the World War era, platinum faced wartime restrictions and strategic demand, encouraging jewelers to turn to alternative white metals. Palladium offered a naturally white appearance without requiring the same platinum supply.

A beautiful example of how the materials used in jewelry can reflect what was happening beyond the jewelry industry itself.

Sometimes the most interesting thing about a gemstone is what it does with light. ✨

Adularescence is the soft, floating glow seen in moonstone, caused by light scattering between microscopic layers within the stone. Asterism creates the star in gems like star sapphire, where light reflects from precisely oriented needle-like inclusions. Play-of-color occurs in precious opal, where its microscopic silica structure diffracts visible light into shifting spectral colors. And orient, most famously seen in fine pearls, is the subtle iridescent effect produced as light interacts with layers of nacre.

Four completely different optical phenomena, all created by the way light interacts with a gemstone’s internal structure.
