Orange County Iowa Club

Orange County Iowa Club The Orange County Iowa Club ("OCIC") is affiliated with the University of Iowa Alumni Association. But the fun doesn’t stop there.

OCIC is open to any alumni, fans, or transplants (of any age) from the Hawkeye State. For those of you unfamiliar with the full array of OCIC activities, every new school year begins with football game watches throughout the fall, capped off with (hopefully) a bowl game watch. The OCIC also hosts a joint bowling match with other local Big 10 alumni clubs in Feb/Mar timeframe and the annual Wiscons

in-Iowa “Cheesehead Classic” golf tournament in June. Also, be sure to look for the Iowa-Wisconsin softball match – tentatively set for November. We are also open to hosting new activities if there is interest in doing so (museum visits, USS Iowa Battleship, social hours, picnics, etc.). Please let us know your suggestions or interests. The OCIC also works hard to fund a scholarship to one student from Orange County each year (with matching funds from the UIAA). There are alumni volunteers who attend college fairs throughout the fall at local high schools who know that an Iowa experience cannot be beat and we want to make it easier for one deserving student making that long trip from Orange County. Your membership dues and other fundraisers, including raffles at several of the game watches and merchandise sales, make this all possible. All we ask for is a voluntary, nominal $10.00 per person annual membership fee. Please contact us if you are interested in donating for this worthy cause.

Whew- Iowa men's basketball team finally get's it's first conference win with a 20 point comeback in OT vs Illinois!
It wasn't pretty , but its a win!

By JAMES ALLAN
hawkeyesports.com

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- It took the third largest comeback in school history, but the end result was the University of Iowa men's basketball team's first Big Ten victory of the season.

The Hawkeyes trailed by 49-29 with 3:53 remaining in the first half before rallying for a 104-97 overtime victory at Illinois on Thursday night at the State Farm Center. Iowa moves to 10-9 overall, 1-5 in Big Ten action.

Iowa outscored the Fighting Illini, 14-7, in the bonus frame after Illinois' Trent Frazier hit a runner from 3-point range with under a second remaining to send the game to overtime.

The buzz-beater didn't faze Iowa, as the team took control by scoring the first nine points of OT. Junior Nicholas Baer made 1-of-2 free throws to give Iowa a 91-90 lead before sophomore Tyler Cook slammed home a dunk off a set play to put the lead to 93-90.

On Iowa's next possession, Garza snared an offensive rebound and scored while falling to the ground and he made the and one to complete the three point play. Jordan Bohannon's dagger 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining stretched the Hawkeye lead to 99-90.

The Hawkeyes made five more free throws down the stretch to finish with 104 points -- Iowa's largest output against Illinois in the series that dates back to 1908.

Iowa shot 50 percent from the field for the game, making 32-of-64 field goals. The Hawkeyes were +19 on the glass (45-26) and they went 33-of-40 from the free throw line (Illinois was 11-of-14).

Bohannon led all scorers with 29 points, making 7-of-16 field goals, including five 3-pointers, to go along with a 10-for-10 night from the free throw stripe. It was Bohannon's second-highest point total this season and his highest in the Big Ten game.

"Jordan was great all game long," said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. "He kept his composure because they came after him. They came after him last year and they came after him again. He was ready this time."

Cook and Garza both posted double-doubles and a total of five Hawkeyes reached double figures. Cook finished with 21 points -- on 9-of-14 shooting -- and 13 rebounds, while Garza had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Isaiah Moss and Baer finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Illinois made nine 3-pointers and shot 54.1 percent in the first half to build a double-digit lead. Iowa led 4-2 in the infant stages of the game before the Fighting Illini reeled off a 13-0 run to take a 15-4 advantage.

Iowa was out of sorts in the first half, eventually falling behind by as many as 20 points, but the Hawkeyes started to right the ship leading into half, trimming the deficit to 54-41.

"It was a manageable number at halftime, that was important," said McCaffery. "We were down 20 in the first half, but we weren't down 20 at halftime. We scored the first 10 points of second half, so now it's a two possession game so it's a completely different game with 17 minutes to go."

Iowa opened the second half on a 10-0 run, capped by a Baer and Bohannon 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three points. The Hawkeyes tied the game at 66 with 12:06 remaining and again at 79 with 5:44 left, but they didn't retake the lead until Garza went off with a personal 8-0 spurt.

Iowa led 90-87 with 5.2 seconds remaining when Frazier took the inbounds pass, drove the court, crossed up Maishe Dailey, and hit a runner with under a second remaining to send the game to overtime.

Frazier paced Illinois with 27 points, making 10-of-20 field goals, including seven 3-pointers. He had 18 3-pointers in 17 games heading into Thursday's contest.

BIG RALLIES
It is the third time in school history that Iowa has rallied from a 20-point deficit to win. The Hawkeyes trailed by 23 points (38-15) with 13 seconds remaining in the first half in an eventual 65-56 win over Gardner-Webb in 2012 and trailed by 22 points (61-39) with 16 minutes left at Illinois in 1987 in a 91-88 overtime triumph.

Jewell and Jackson named to All American Team!

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell and junior defensive back Josh Jackson have been named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America team Monday afternoon.

This is the fourth time in five years Iowa has had an FWAA All-American (King, 2015; Scherff, 2014; Scherff, 2013) and first time in that span that Iowa has had two first-team All-Americans.

Jewell and Jackson become the 24th and 25th consensus All-Americans in Iowa history. This year marks the fifth time in program history that a pair of Hawkeyes earned consensus All-America honors in the same season. Jewell and Jackson join Robert Gallery and Nate Kaeding (2003), Eric Steinbach and Dallas Clark (2002), Chuck Long and Larry Station (1985), and Andre Tippett and Reggie Roby (1981).

Jewell, a native of Decorah, Iowa, was named a Walter Camp Foundation first-team All-American, Associated Press first-team All-American, SB Nation first-team All-American, and was recipient of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Jack Lambert Award. Jewell earned first-team all-conference honors by Big Ten coach and media and Associated Press. He leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally in tackles (125 total, 11.4 per game). Jewell is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. In addition, he was a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Butkus Awards.

Jewell is the third Hawkeye in program history to have three seasons with at least 115 tackles (Larry Station 83, 84, 85; Abdul Hodge 03, 04, 05). Jewell has led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons (126 in 2015, 124 in 2016).

Jewell has 426 career tackles, fifth all-time in program history.

Jackson, a native of Corinth, Texas, is tied as the national leader with seven interceptions and earned all-conference recognition for the first time and was named a first-team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation, Associated Press, and SB Nation. He leads the nation with 25 passes defended and is tied for second in interception return touchdowns (two), and pass break-ups (18). He ranks third in interception return yards (163). Jackson's seven interceptions rank fourth best for a single season at Iowa, just one from tying Iowa's single-season record (Desmond King, 2015; Lou King, 1981; Nile Kinnick, 1939).

Jackson tied Iowa's school record with two interception returns for touchdowns (B.J. Lowery, 2013) at Wisconsin, covering 43 and 52 yards. The previous week, Jackson tied Iowa's school record with three interceptions in Iowa's 55-24 win over No. 3 Ohio State. Jackson also had a forced fumble at Wisconsin, and a blocked field goal in a win over North Texas. He has started all 12 games this season and recorded 47 tackles. Jackson is a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award.

Iowa (7-5) is bowl eligible for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons. The Hawkeyes will meet Boston College (7-5) in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27 (4:15 p.m. CT). Tickets are available at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.
