"For the first 20ish years of my life, I considered myself a purple person. You know the type. Purple shirt. Purple shoes. Purple pens. Everything that could come in purple, I'd get in purple. And then I encountered prickly pears for the first time. My purple world was turned upside down. I couldn't stop staring. My favorite color is not purple. It is prickly pear pink. I still love purple. But it's in second place.
It’s funny how sometimes simple things can provide big inspiration. The prickly pear is really not all that special. It’s native to the arid parts of the Americas, but it can be found all over the world now. It’s even considered an invasive species in some places.
But I don’t see an invasive species. I see beauty. The pear isn’t just one singular color, and that’s what makes it so special to me. It can be a deep, vibrant magenta with a touch of purple. It can also be a mix of that magenta and a bright green, that combine to make a color that almost looks like a bright orange. And they can also be a cooler, more earthy green.
I wanted to bottle that color up. All of those, in one ink. And I am so grateful that HATCH and the ink wizard behind Pennonia helped me make that a reality. I love the color of prickly pears, and I think you will too."
