Culture Check-In: Tap Into the Vibe:

When Excellence Lands: The Triumphant Return of Young Black Debaters from Harvard

By E. Marie | TheBlacBox

There’s a moment circulating on social media that stops you in your scroll. It’s a group of young Black students walking through an airport terminal to thunderous applause, fresh off their return from the Harvard Debate Council Invitational. It’s more than a welcome. It’s a celebration. A recognition. A declaration.

These aren’t just kids. They are scholars. Strategists. Speakers. Leaders in training.

And they didn’t just attend Harvard’s prestigious summer debate program, they dominated. After weeks of intensive training and intellectual rigor, they stood toe to toe with some of the brightest students in the world and won. But it’s not just the debate victories that make this moment special. It’s what it represents.

When these students stepped off that plane, they were walking into the arms of a community that understands just how monumental their journey is. They were walking with the weight of history and the hope of what’s possible when access meets opportunity. It’s the visual reminder that Black brilliance isn’t rare, it’s just rarely amplified.

The Harvard Debate Council Diversity Project, which recruits and trains Black youth from underserved communities, is the force behind this wave of rising stars.

They are the living rebuttal to every lowered expectation. So, thank you for showing us that the future isn’t coming—it just landed.

And we’ll be here—clapping loudly.

From One Legacy to the Next: Why the Closing of the Tallahassee Flea Market Marks a New Beginning for Black Business

By E Marie Sissle

If you are from Tallahassee, chances are you have spent a Saturday or Sunday morning walking through the Tallahassee Flea Market. Maybe you were looking for a vintage vinyl, a pair of hoop earrings, a deep fryer, or just a hot plate of something made with love. For over 30 years, this market was more than a place to shop. It was a community. A cultural meeting ground. A training ground for small business. A space where Black vendors in particular found room to grow.

So yes, it stings to see it go. The Tallahassee Flea Market will close its doors in August, and with it, a familiar part of our city’s rhythm. But in true Tallahassee fashion, where one door closes, another opens—and this new door has our name on it.

Welcome to the Marketplace.

Set in the creative heart of the city—Railroad Square Art District—the Black Biz Tally Marketplace is not a replacement. It is a resurrection. It is a reimagining of what it looks like when Black entrepreneurs are given space to rise without limits. This marketplace is built on intention. It is curated for culture. And it is ready to open its doors to the community on Saturday July 26.

Every Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Railroad Square will come alive with the sound and soul of Black owned business. Picture this: fresh made treats from The Chocolate Dandies, self serve selfie stations for the culture, handmade art, natural hair care, custom T shirts, vintage fashion, and all the flavor and flair our people bring when given space to shine.

But more than the products, this is about the possibility.

The Black Biz Tally Marketplace is about building a consistent economic engine where Black creators and entrepreneurs can thrive. It is about family legacy. About professional presentation. About creative freedom. It is about building wealth without waiting for permission.

This is not a moment. It is a movement.

So here is the call: if you have ever said you want to support Black business, this is your chance to do it on purpose. Show up. Tell a friend. Spend some money. Share a post. Volunteer. Collaborate. Let us build the kind of marketplace that is worthy of our genius.

We honor the legacy of the flea market. We carry it forward with a new name, a new location, and a renewed vision.

Key Statistics
• Studies commonly state that while dollars in Asian and Jewish communities circulate for 20–30 days, in Black communities a dollar circulates for only around 6 hours .
• According to research from the Selig Center and Black Star Project, the Black community sees only one recirculation, versus 6 times in Latino communities, 9 times in Asian contexts, and effectively unlimited recirculation in white communities .
• Despite having around $1.6 trillion in buying power, only about 2% of that is reinvested into Black-owned businesses .

🔁 Why It Matters

Short circulation means Black-owned businesses receive less reinvestment, which stifles economic growth, wealth-building, and job creation within the community.
