From One Legacy to the Next: Why the Closing of the Tallahassee Flea Market Marks a New Beginning for Black Business
By E Marie Sissle
If you are from Tallahassee, chances are you have spent a Saturday or Sunday morning walking through the Tallahassee Flea Market. Maybe you were looking for a vintage vinyl, a pair of hoop earrings, a deep fryer, or just a hot plate of something made with love. For over 30 years, this market was more than a place to shop. It was a community. A cultural meeting ground. A training ground for small business. A space where Black vendors in particular found room to grow.
So yes, it stings to see it go. The Tallahassee Flea Market will close its doors in August, and with it, a familiar part of our city’s rhythm. But in true Tallahassee fashion, where one door closes, another opens—and this new door has our name on it.
Welcome to the Marketplace.
Set in the creative heart of the city—Railroad Square Art District—the Black Biz Tally Marketplace is not a replacement. It is a resurrection. It is a reimagining of what it looks like when Black entrepreneurs are given space to rise without limits. This marketplace is built on intention. It is curated for culture. And it is ready to open its doors to the community on Saturday July 26.
Every Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Railroad Square will come alive with the sound and soul of Black owned business. Picture this: fresh made treats from The Chocolate Dandies, self serve selfie stations for the culture, handmade art, natural hair care, custom T shirts, vintage fashion, and all the flavor and flair our people bring when given space to shine.
But more than the products, this is about the possibility.
The Black Biz Tally Marketplace is about building a consistent economic engine where Black creators and entrepreneurs can thrive. It is about family legacy. About professional presentation. About creative freedom. It is about building wealth without waiting for permission.
This is not a moment. It is a movement.
So here is the call: if you have ever said you want to support Black business, this is your chance to do it on purpose. Show up. Tell a friend. Spend some money. Share a post. Volunteer. Collaborate. Let us build the kind of marketplace that is worthy of our genius.
We honor the legacy of the flea market. We carry it forward with a new name, a new location, and a renewed vision.
