Is Time Travel Possible?

Ask a physicist and they’ll probably tell you no.

Ask me? I’ll tell you to come to Hill Auction Gallery.

I’ve spent decades walking through estates, handling objects, and watching people’s reactions when they rediscover something that once belonged to another life. And I can tell you with absolute certainty - time travel is real.

It just doesn’t look like a DeLorean.

Sometimes it’s a cast iron toy train sitting on a table. The moment someone picks it up, they’re six years old again. Christmas morning. The smell of their grandmother’s kitchen. The sound of their father’s voice.

Sometimes it’s a vintage perfume bottle. One scent and suddenly they’re standing in their mother’s doorway, watching her get ready for a night out - pearls on the dresser, laughter in the hallway.

Sometimes it’s a vinyl record, a tin lunchbox, or a handwritten recipe card tucked inside a cookbook that hasn’t been opened in forty years.

That’s what we deal in at Hill Auction Gallery.

Not just antiques and collectibles - but portals.

Every object carries a story. A memory. A piece of someone’s yesterday waiting to be rediscovered. And when the right buyer finds the right piece, something remarkable happens.

Time collapses.

A memory returns.

A feeling you forgot you had comes rushing back.

Scientists can keep working on the theory.

Meanwhile, I’ll be here - surrounded by time machines of every shape and size, watching people travel every single day.

Is time travel possible?

Come find out for yourself.

Picasso Ceramics - The Market Finally Caught Up

For many years, Picasso ceramics lived in the shadow of his paintings and drawings. Serious collectors chased the canvases while the ceramics were often viewed as secondary works - interesting, but not necessarily investment material.

That perception has changed dramatically.

Collectors today are recognizing what these pieces truly represent: original works conceived directly by Picasso, produced in collaboration with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris beginning in the late 1940s. They carry the same imagination, spontaneity, and visual language found in his paintings - just translated into clay.

What once traded quietly has become one of the most active segments of the Picasso market.

Why?

Accessibility plays a role. While a Picasso painting may sit far beyond the reach of many collectors, ceramics offer an entry point into owning a work by one of the most important artists in history. But beyond accessibility, collectors are beginning to appreciate the artistic significance of these works on their own terms.

The forms are playful.
The surfaces are painterly.
Each piece carries Picasso’s unmistakable hand.

Today, strong examples regularly perform well at auction, and serious collectors are assembling focused groups of them - sometimes hundreds at a time.

Markets evolve.
Taste evolves.

And occasionally the art world revisits something that was hiding in plain sight.

Picasso ceramics are a perfect example.

What the New Generation of Collectors Actually Wants

Not china sets.
Not heavy dining room furniture.

They want:

• Mid-century design
• Vintage watches
• Designer pieces
• Art with personality

The next generation isn’t abandoning collecting.

They’re redefining it.

People ask me all the time
What is the best type of art to buy?

My answer is always the same.

Buy what you love.

Because the first and most important return on art is not financial.
It is visual enjoyment.
It is emotional stimulation.
It is living with something that moves you.

If the market goes up, that is a bonus.
If the market softens, you still wake up every day and enjoy what is on your wall.

That is real value.

Art should speak to you first.
The numbers come second.

When you collect with passion and discipline, you win either way.

Why provenance can change everything.

Two paintings can look almost identical.
Same subject.
Same size.
Same artist.

But one sells for twice as much.

Why?

Provenance.

Provenance is the documented history of ownership.
Where it has been.
Who owned it.
Which collection it came from.
Whether it was exhibited or published.

Collectors do not just buy the object.
They buy the story, the chain of custody, and the confidence that comes with it.

Strong provenance reduces risk.
It strengthens authenticity.
It increases desirability.

A painting that once hung in a respected collection or passed through a notable gallery carries weight. It signals validation. It creates trust before the first bid is even placed.

In auction, trust drives competition.
Competition drives price.

I have seen pieces transform in value simply because the history behind them was uncovered and properly documented.

Condition matters.
Rarity matters.
Quality matters.

But provenance can change everything.

Is there any way to predict the next big thing in collectibles?

You cannot predict it with certainty.

But you can read the signals.

In collectibles, trends usually build quietly before they explode.

Here is what I watch.

Generational nostalgia.
What the 35 to 50 year old demographic loved growing up is often the next wave. That is how vintage toys, trading cards, and early video games moved.

Supply drying up.
When quality examples disappear from the market, the next strong piece creates competition.

Condition sensitivity.
Markets mature when buyers begin demanding pristine examples. That is when serious money enters.

Crossover interest.
When collectors from art, luxury watches, or design begin entering a collectible category, attention shifts quickly.

Institutional recognition.
Museums and major auction houses legitimizing a category is a turning point.

The mistake most people make is chasing headlines after a record sale.

By then the easy gains are gone.

The real opportunity lives just before consensus.

In collectibles, the next big thing is rarely random.
It is usually a category that was overlooked, underpriced, and quietly building demand.

What happens with just whispers of war?

Gold listens first.
Silver follows.

Before headlines confirm anything, capital begins to reposition.

Gold tightens.
Silver premiums expand.
Liquidity shifts quietly into tangible metal.

It is not fear.
It is preservation.

For thousands of years, gold and silver have outlasted political regimes, currencies, and economic cycles.

They are finite.
They are globally recognized.
They require no explanation.

When uncertainty enters the room, capital moves toward what cannot be printed, diluted, or digitally erased.

The reaction often begins long before the public fully sees the risk.

Whispers move sentiment.
Sentiment moves capital.

Gold and silver are not about speculation.
They are about stability when confidence wavers.

Discovery.

Most people see the final catalog description.

They don’t see the real work behind it.

Cataloging is not data entry.
It is investigation.

It’s being a detective.

We examine signatures under magnification.
We compare brushwork.
We research exhibition history.
We trace ownership records.
We study reference books and past auction results.
We look for inconsistencies others miss.

Sometimes a small label on the back changes everything.
Sometimes a faint inscription unlocks provenance.
Sometimes what looks ordinary turns out to be significant.

And sometimes we rule things out.

The real work happens before the first bid is ever placed.

Because accuracy builds trust.
Trust builds confidence.
Confidence builds competition.

Discovery is where value begins.
