Widespread rain with embedded thunderstorms is forecast to move across the area from west to east on Saturday. Most locations are expected to see between 0.25" and 0.75", but some spots may see over 1". A popular question we have been getting is will this rain impact the ongoing river flooding? Short answer, not really. We will not see any higher crests due to this rain, but some sites may take longer to fall back below flood stage.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Tuskegee Airman Roscoe DuBois Draper.

A native of Pennsylvania, Roscoe represented a grit and determination that marked his career with the . Considered 'triple-rated' because he earned wings in navigation, as a bombardier, and a pilot, he defied all expectations popular culture perpetuated of Black Service Members.

In 1940, Roscoe received his private pilot license and was one of two men selected for the secondary course at Tuskegee Institute, which he completed in 1942. He was one of the first ten Black men selected to serve as flight instructor for the USAAC 'Tuskegee Experiment,' teaching cadets in their primary phase of flight training. His teaching style earned him the nickname 'Coach' while he was simultaneously mentored by aviation legend 'Chief' Charles Alfred Anderson.

Ever humble, Roscoe remarked of the returning Tuskegee Airmen from overseas, "Guys we taught came back from the war and had more experience than we had." It should not be forgotten that they were able to survive the war due to the commitment of Roscoe and other instructors to put away their hubris and desires for wartime fame to prepare the 99th for battle.

We set aside today to honor this man's legacy.

Lightning Optimal Climb Profile

An airshow spectacle long since sadly absent from British skies is that of an English Electric Lightning, aimed vertically upward, thrusting away seemingly as if on course for space.

This marvellous and often repeated display has however led to a bit of a myth - or perhaps a misunderstanding - that this was operationally how a Lightning would climb to intercept its quarry.

In actual fact a truly vertical climb would lead ultimately to a stall, and long before reaching service ceiling. The 'optimal' climb profile for departure, for instance in the case of a genuine QRA scramble to height, would not involve climbing at greater than 30 degrees, with the aircraft first accelerating to over 400 KIAS. A stabilised climb rate of around 20,000 ft could then be achieved.

Perhaps this was not visually as impressive as the 'airshow' departure, but nonetheless this profile meant the Lightning could reach 36,000 ft less than 180 seconds after brake release - a pace that was a challenge for many types that remained in service long after the English Electric rocket ship had been retired.

About Spirits of St. Louis R/C Flying Club

Spirits’ History

Although the Club became an Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) chartered club #396 in 1965, there were a number of Spirits activities that preceded this. When people with the same interests began to meet regularly and share interests and activities, an organization was born. At first, this group of modelers met with the McDonnell Aircraft Club, which had a field supplied by their employer. These future “Spirits” members were allowed to fly with the McDonnell club members with a permit issued by that club. This didn't last long, as McDonnell informed them that their presence might void their insurance.

The Spirits became a Missouri not-for-profit corporation on Oct. 24, 1968.

While searching for a field of our own, we flew at various other sites. The northern area of St. Louis County had many large fields, such as Keeven Sod Farm and Earth City which were suitable for flying R/C.
