BeerFest started back in the summer of 1996 in the little borough of Smithton PA by a group of friends just wanting to have a good time. “One Keg, One Dream” was the slogan that year. It would be the first “keg” party for the “Smithton Boys” at the site formally known as “The Foundation”. With year one such a success, the boys decided to go bigger and better the following year. Unfortunately, tha
t was the last year for BeerFest due to college, basic training, the military and jobs taking over the lives of those same Smithton Boys and moving them throughout the US and abroad. In 2004 the site now known as The DeSimone Inn was purchased by the DeSimone Family of Hoffman Rd. With the before mention “Smithton Boys” established in their lives and locations secured, it was decided to again start up BeerFest. Friends got together, a good time was had by all and the bonfire lasted until the morning paper was delivered. With the large amount of guest staying in tents and on the property, that property became known as The DeSimone Inn. While some traditions were transferred from the old BeerFest, a new tradition was born with the morning paper delivery becoming the sign that BeerFest for that year has ended and it was “ok” to go to bed. Since that year, the gathering is now known as “BeerFest at The DeSimone Inn”. The following years found better ideas, larger crowds and more hype year after year. In year three, it became a catered buffet event. In year four, Beer Mugs were ordered and the now famous “DUCK 4 A BUCK” game began. “DUCK 4 A BUCK” took the duck pond game we all loved as kids and turned it in to a winning games-of-chance game, where one lucky winner would win a BeerFest Prize Pack. The prize pack includes a BeerFest t-shirt, BeerFest Beer Mug, Beer Mug Beads and various other Miller Lite gifts. Since the first year of BeerFest at The DeSimone Inn, one of the main attraction besides background music and the bonfire was the playing of BeerPong. After the first year of “Winner Stays” rules, BeerFest board members decided to organize the games a bit more. One year had a regular season with points and seeding. The next year was bracket based tourney and then turned into a double-elimination tournament. The current rules have evolved to make the BeerFest/BeerPong experience fun for all but at the same time crowning a champion at the end of the night. Two tables (Heinz Field and CONSOL Energy Center) are used for warm up games and competition. Past champions are given higher seeds and the remaining participating teams draw their seed for the tourney. The Tourney begins at 9:30 giving all teams or random players time to play and practice. Once the tournament begins, it is intense competition until a champion is crowned and the trophy is raised.
