Possible Causes for Refund Delays:

There are several common reasons why your refund could be delayed. Understanding these factors can help you identify any potential issues and manage your expectations during the process.

1) Paper Filing Backlog

The IRS processes paper returns slowly, do E-file and choose direct deposit.

2) Required Delays for Certain Tax Credits

Legally, the IRS is not allowed to issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), regardless of how early you submit your return.

3) Mistakes or Missing Information

Minor mistakes may result in significant delays

4) Identity Checks and Fraud Prevention

The IRS has security measures in place that flag tax returns potentially linked to identity theft. If your return is flagged, your refund will be on hold until you verify your identity.
