In Scandinavia, spring break is all about murder mysteries. And here's my latest translation just in time—Sara Blædel's A Mother's Love. It's set on the small Danish island of Tåsinge and will surely be banned by the GOP. And beyond that, I can't think of a single thing I can tell you about this book without giving something away. You've never read a murder mystery like this before. When I told my family what the murder weapon was, they couldn't believe it. And you won't either!

Detective Louise Rick uncovers dark secrets swirling around an inn in a seemingly idyllic tourist town in this propulsive new crime novel from #1 Danish bestselling sensation Sara Blaedel. When innkeeper...

After risking her life—and heart—to free Grif in Iron Wolf (2023), Juva turns her attention to wolf-sickness, which continues to spread in this translated title from Norway.

New translation out! This is by far the most gruesome murder mystery I've ever translated. Shudder. Every day, while translating this, I would arrive at the dining table for lunch or dinner and the family would ask how my work was going and I would share a glossed-over, cleaned-up summary barely suitable to relate in the presence of children. A book like this just can't BE cleaned up. Oh, Denmark! Shudder.

Praise for Dissolved:

Danish authors Blædel and Nordbo team up to follow the search for a kidnapper who’s snatching victims from greater Odense at a truly alarming rate.

New translation out! This is a beautiful nonfiction Norwegian children's book published by a tiny Canadian press that could really use your support. The long (almost 100 pages), delightfully illustrated book covers Arctic flora and fauna and ice, so many types of ice! It features illustrations of all sorts of Arctic life from ice algae, plankton, copepods, amphipods, sea butterflies, sea angels, comb jellies, and krill to fish. From Arctic coral, sea anemones, nutclams, cockles and scallops, to narwhals and polar bears. It includes a child's introduction to why Arctic ice is important for the whole planet, what's happening in the Arctic, and constructive things children can do (travel less by plane or car, walk or bike more, eat more locally grown foods, try to reduce consumption, use less plastic, etc.)

Yippee!!! Two of my translations made it onto the longlist for the Petrona Award:

Lina Areklew's Death in Summer (Sweden, Canelo Crime) is set on Sweden's High Coast, on Ulvön Island. Everything about this book is great, but most especially the setting and how the protagonists are moving forward with their lives despite very difficult pasts.

Anne Mette Hancock's The Co**se Flower (Denmark, Swift Press). Kirkus's starred review called it "Scandinavian noir at its noirest" and they're right. This is a such an exquisitely balanced blend of different kinds of creepy, building up to a spectacularly epic finale.

Congratulations to two great authors!!!

New translation out! This is my fourth Katrine Engberg murder mystery. Grizzly and hilarious in turns. The murder is not for the faint of heart (shudder), but the police personalities (Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner) are talented, hard-working, quirky, and delightful as ever. Set on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, this book is the next best thing to going there! You get to "see" the whole thing in this book: the beaches, the antique shops, the marinas, the dive bars, the tourist restaurants, and the homes of people who have lived here forever. Engberg invites you in to dig through their desk drawers, their basements, their tragedies and their victories. I hope I get to Bornholm someday, because it's alive in my mind now! Great book! Hope they make a movie out of it...

Kirkus gave Siri Pettersen's Iron Wolf a starred review! It'll be out next February, a great Norwegian book that is *so* completely fictional and yet *so* very eerily suited to the current weird vibe of our era.

"An immersive, darkly exhilarating read. (Fantasy. 14-adult)"

In Pettersen’s new series opener set in the same universe as her Ravens Rings trilogy, a young wolf hunter is drawn into an ancient struggle to which her family holds the key.

New murder mystery translation out in the UK today!

Lina Areklew's Death in Summer is the perfect murder mystery and it's only £1.99 on kindle at the moment. It's set on Sweden's High Coast in the tiny town of Ulvöhamn, a remote place famous for the infamously stinky, fermented herring dish surströmming. The characters are great, exactly what you want in this late pandemic era. People who have been through tragedies, awkward office politics, career changes, rethinking life in the city... It's like a vacation to remote Swedish island. With murder. A perfect summer mystery. Please spread the word. I really hope a US publisher will pick it up, because I so, so, so want to translate the 2nd book!!!

New translation out today!!! Haymaker in Heaven is an unpretentious literary contemplation of nineteenth century haymaking, fjord life and the Scandinavian immigrant experience, centered around the life of author Edvard Hoem’s great grandfather, Knut Hansen Nesje (1838–1912). This is an ode to hard physical labor done the old-fashioned way by an author who was an active communist in the 70s and published by a nonprofit publisher. You don’t see this on the literary scene every day. It’s beautifully and sparingly written. I wrote my master’s thesis on one of Hoem’s earlier books and was thrilled to get the chance to translate this one.

From one of Norway’s leading writers, translated into English for the very first time, comes a transatlantic novel of dreams, sacrifice, and transformation set at the turn of the twentieth century. The year is 1874. Nesje is a recent widower with a young son, working as a haymaker on an estate in ...
