The story of Ciccotti's Jewel Case began in Anagni, Italy, a small town near Rome, where William Ciccotti was born in 1893. Once in America, Ciccotti prospered by serving the American love for Italian cuisine by opening an Italian restaurant in Scranton. Ciccotti's clientele spread beyond the borders of Scranton, and he built up a reputation among traveling professionals. Fields, Jimmy Durante, Enrico Caruso, and Babe Ruth were just some of the greats who stopped in at the restaurant. Ciccotti's business prospered, but his real love was for the permanently beautiful rather than just the merely appetizing. His son Ang Ciccotti, set out to learn the techniques of jewelry manufacture through employment with the Krementz Jewel Co. and a succession of retail jewelers. After officers training at Clemson College and a tour of duty in the Air Force, plus service in the infantry in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, Ang was ready to return to Scranton and begin his life's work. When Ang came home his father was prepared for him. "Ciccotti's" was opened in 1945 at a Spruce Street location. Throughout its history the operation has been a family affair. From the beginning Ang's aim was to operate a fine guild-type jewelry store in which skilled craftsmen would design and manufacture unique pieces. In order to achieve this goal he had to extend his market beyond the normal limits of a local retailer. Today the Ciccotti's are pleased at the number of customers from other states and even other countries who look to Ciccotti's Jewel Case for heirloom-quality treasures. The stores present location at 208 Wyoming Avenue is a relatively large two story showcase for jewelry, showing all types of jewelry at all different price ranges. "There is something for everyone at Ciccotti's, it's not just the best we have to offer, it's the best there is.”
The in-store bench jewelers at work are visible through a mirrored partition; and the front entrance is a glass door with a large diamond ring and wedding ring handle, which Mary and Ang designed. Currently the store has expanded its size 40 percent, the new section that displays a glass facade is now where the corporate office is. When Ang retired Mary became President of the corporation as well as principal designer. She remembers that "from childhood Bill and Tom were around the work rooms, learning engraving, repairs, design." Later this training was expanded through seminars and jewelry schools, as well as the Dale Carnegie Course, which both brothers completed with honors winning two awards. Their training culminated at the internationally known Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California-an adjunct to their degrees from the University of Scranton. Ciccotti's took first-place awards for both outdoor advertising and window displays at a DeBeers program in Los Angeles, California. The National Jewelers Association has also recognized Ciccotti's advertisements-all created in-house for television, radio, and newspapers. The world renowned Maurice Lacroix fine quality Swiss watch company requested Ciccotti's on two separate occasions to their corporate United States headquarters dealer symposium. This is a very prestigious honor, only a select few jewelers in the entire country were selected for their outstanding sales and marketing ideas. Also, the Citizen Watch Company of North America has awarded Ciccotti's Jewel Case with several Gold and Platinum awards for continued outstanding sales and marketing year after year. Tom and Bill Ciccotti have earned Senior Jewelers of America Professional Certification from the National Trade Association. "Being a JA Certified Senior Sales Professional is an important designation" says Jewelers of America (JA) President and CEO, Matthew Runci. "There is a fundamental difference between a JA Certified Senior Sales Professional and someone who just happens to make or sell jewelry. Tom and Bill Ciccotti's successful completion of the JA Certification exams attests to both the Ciccotti's proficiency as managers, lets customers know the Ciccotti's are qualified to handle their jewelry needs and demonstrates their commitment to providing superior service." Ciccotti's Jewel Case has recently been accepted into the prestigious American Watch Guild. Executive Director of AWG Bertram Kalisher told the Ciccotti's he looks forward to working together with them to advance the prestige of the industry in maintaining the standards of product and service in the watch industry with the Maurice Lacroix President on the National Board. Ang who passed away in November 2002 gave back services to the community through boards and committees such as University of Scranton, Marywood University, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Northeastern Economic Development Council, Board of Directors Mellon Bank, Saint Ann's Basilica, Saint Francis of Assisi Kitchen, Ronald McDonald House, to name a few. Mary and Ang have always attributed the success of Ciccotti's Jewel Case to the untiring efforts of their sons, Tom and Bill, the Ciccotti Jewel Case employees, and their ever-growing and loyal customer base. The Ciccotti's look forward to passing this legacy on to future generations. The best is yet to come.
