The original mainspring broke in this Hamilton model 992. It was 106 years old and was replaced by a white alloy "unbreakable" mainspring. The watch itself looks like it was seldom (if ever) used, and was likely never worked on, yet it still looks brand new and started running after half a turn of the crown.
A thing of beauty!

Now, let's all step into a time machine and go 106 years into the future; will there be anything similar built today, that will still be running and look brand new? Very doubtful.

This is what an 18k solid yellow gold Breitling looks like after being polished by hand. Jewelers (as well as most watch shops) love to run these through a high-speed buffing machine because your gold ends up in their filters, and when it comes time to clean them, they have a vacation-sized collection of customer gold to sell. Yes, there is an entire industry of filter buyers.
We don't subscribe to that philosophy because if you look at it through the lens of truth, it is a form of theft; albeit, theft with implied consent.
It's a lot more labor intensive and it doesn't do quite the job as a high-speed buffer does, but it won't round off your gold corners! We think it looks pretty good, and so did the customer.

The following images are in progressive order and show the replacement process of a typical barrel-type mainspring. Image number one shows a broken mainspring, still confined within it's barrel. The following images are of a cleaned, new mainspring being installed into the barrel, then the barrel into the clock.
This process requires the tools shown, in addition to formal training and experience, as clock mainsprings are capable of removing skin and flesh from bone.
