Spectacular piece of history here, folks! We sold this piece on our 6am auction today. This finely made antique pendant featuring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, was carved in rock crystal and set in a gold frame. The two portraits represent two defining moments in American history—Washington as the leader of the American Revolution and first President of the United States, and Lincoln as the president who led the country through the Civil War and preserved the Union.
Pieces like this were made as patriotic keepsakes and historical mementos, particularly during the 19th century, when portraits of Washington and Lincoln were widely used in jewelry and other commemorative objects. The combination of hand-carved crystal, gold mounting, and two iconic American presidents makes this an especially interesting example of American historical jewelry- and we were so proud to be able to auction off to one of our loyal clients!
