Same opal, different light.

This is the Sunflare necklace from the Strata Collection, featuring an Ethiopian opal from the Welo region paired with a small sapphire accent.

Opal is notoriously hard to photograph because the color shifts every time the light changes — one moment it flashes green, the next orange, yellow, or soft fire from within the stone.

For Strata, I’m drawn to that feeling of hidden color revealed by the landscape: mineral seams, layered rock, and unexpected brightness held inside organic forms.

Which photo shows the opal best — 1, 2, 3, or 4?

New Mineral Vein earrings, finished this week.

A winding brass vein cuts through textured Argentium silver, opening around a golden sapphire suspended within the seam.

This design is inspired by mineral deposits revealed in fractured stone — those unexpected lines of color, shimmer, and movement that appear when the surface breaks open.

I love how these feel both earthy and bright: silver texture, warm brass, and that little flash of golden sapphire.

Do these feel more like fractured stone, flowing water, or something in between?

The first earring is finished — today I’m making its match.

This new Strata design is inspired by the layered lines you see in rock formations, canyon walls, and places where time leaves a visible trace in the landscape. I’m playing with that idea through stone, metal, texture, and the way the silver seems to wrap and hold the shape.

Today’s bench work is about building the second earring and seeing how the pair comes together — always the interesting part with one-of-a-kind work.

Should I keep exploring this Strata direction?

A few unexpected “free” studio days between shows meant one thing… time to play. ✨

I’ve been sketching and experimenting with new ideas for the River Tumbled collection — a couple of cuff concepts and these small organic earrings inspired by erosion, river stones, and shifting water pathways.

But honestly? The biggest win today wasn’t the design itself. It was the process.

Something finally clicked with sawing. For the first time, I cut these earrings out without snapping saw blades every few minutes or feeling completely frustrated the entire time. That tiny shift from fighting the metal to actually working with it felt huge.

I think sawing might officially be becoming part of my language as a metalsmith — and that opens up so many possibilities for future Two Gems designs.

Sometimes growth in the studio looks less like a finished collection and more like one quiet afternoon where your hands suddenly understand something new.

Which direction speaks to you more so far — the organic openwork earrings or the textured River Tumbled cuff experiments?

Layers of earth. Mineral seams. Compressed geological time. ❤️

The new Strata Ruby ring was inspired by exposed canyon walls and the quiet beauty of shifting earth layers. A natural ruby sits within a brass bezel, while the brass line flowing down the band mirrors the mineral seams often found running through stone formations.

I love working with natural rubies like this one — stones that still hold their organic inclusions and internal layers instead of the perfectly clear appearance many commercial rubies are treated to achieve.

Set in Argentium silver with warm brass accents, Strata feels both grounded and sculptural — like carrying a small piece of the landscape with you.

Would you wear a ruby that shows its natural character?

Designing gemstone rings… just not in my usual studio.

Right now, my workbench looks a little different.

I’m at my sister’s house while she recovers from knee surgery—
and I brought a small collection of stones with me to keep creating in the in-between moments.

Ametrine.
Guinea ruby.
Dendritic opal.
Mexican fire opal.
Turquoise.
And a few quiet greens that feel like early spring.

The plan?
Start building out production-style bezels… even without all my usual tools.

It’s slower.
A little imperfect.
But also a reminder that this work—
this shaping of metal around stone—
doesn’t have to be forced to be meaningful.

Sometimes it just meets you where you are.

And these… will become rings that carry that story forward.

Which stone would you turn into a ring first?

Two days. Red rocks. And my first time showing at Garden of the Gods.

May 16–17, I’ll be in Colorado Springs for the Garden of the Gods Art Festival—set against one of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever had the chance to show in.

It feels like the right place for this work…

turquoise that echoes desert sky, silver shaped by hand, pieces built slowly and intentionally—just like the landscapes that inspire them.

I’m especially excited to be alongside so many talented artists, all bringing their own perspective into this space.

And if you’ve only ever seen my work online, this is where it changes—
you can feel the weight, see the texture, and try on the pieces that are meant to be worn, not just viewed.

If you’re anywhere near Colorado Springs, come see me May 16–17. I’d truly love to meet you in person and help you find your piece of nature to carry with you.

Not everything makes it to Instagram first.

Some pieces begin quietly—like these River Tumbled earrings with deep blue sapphire, shaped the way water shapes stone… slowly, naturally, without force.

My newsletter subscribers see them first.
Along with new collections, show updates, and the occasional studio-only release.

It’s where I share what’s unfolding before it’s fully out in the world.
