Today is the first day of our 93rd year in business! My grandfather Donovan opened his first solo shop in Oakland in 1923. Prior to that he was a partner with his brother Owen with Allphin Brothers Jewelers in Wyoming (circa 1920). The photo shows my Uncle Richard (the optometrist) on the left, my Grandfather Donovan in the middle, and my Father Lawrence Senior on the right. Despite their Wyoming origins, I'm pretty sure they didn't actually dress like cowboys all the time. The occasion for the cool hats and the crazy cuffs was a local merchants association "wild west" event. Being community active has been an important part of Allphin Jewelers since the beginning.

Allphin Jewelers donated this bike as a raffle prize for BikeSL tomorrow. Made by Felt Bicycles, it has crazy fat tires, cool red spokes, and a cushy seat. The perfect combination for relaxed cruising. This FREE event is tomorrow on Parrott St., right next to my shop. We have a group ride from Parrott St. up to the Dunsmuir-Hellman Historic Estate and back that starts at 11AM. Registration is online or in person and starts at 10:30AM. Live music starts at noon. I'm working on sizing a ring up several sizes. The ring is platinum, and requires splicing in a section of platinum sizing stock. The platinum solder melts at 1400 degrees, and emits lots of harmful UV rays...

This is an "in progress" photo of a custom pendant I made for a tropical fish enthusiast. He sent me a photo, I reduced it to pendant size, and epoxied the photo to a sheet of 14 karat white gold. I have just finished cutting out the shape of of the fish, and the colors you see are whats left of the photo.
