North Beach native Edward Emery graces our walls with his second TigerBunny Studio solo art show - this time expanding his signature aesthetic of whimsical portraiture with surrealist scenery. Fresh off of a strong second solo art show in Marfa, TX Emery continues a dominant run of exhibitions, solidifying his place in the art world as a creative force to be reckoned with.

SKRAPS is an immersive solo art exhibition which offers a glimpse into the life and travels of Japanese-American artist Yasushi Matsui ❤️

Everyday paper scraps (such as ripped up flyers or receipts) that many would consider trash or recycle bin fodder at best, prove to serve as a treasure trove of memories and deeply personal documentation here, in Matsui’s stockpile of work, amassed over the course of the last decade. In addition to his beautifully delicate, hand-made washi paper pieces, they also serve as canvases for his wonderfully diverse drawings and paintings; a swirl of thoughtful realist portraiture and dreamlike fantasy all at once.

The installation is a peek into his many fragile, one-of-one art scrapbooks and the artist’s world itself. Hundreds of framed signed prints are on display and available for purchase, as well as paintings and, finally, video “flip books” demonstrating the puzzle-like complexity of his intricate pages.

Rounding out the show’s introductory experience are Matsui’s longtime collaborators and Bay Area music and culture ambassadors aka and - of and legend. Yasushi, himself, will also lend his musical talents to the showcase.

Additionally, we welcome Japanese Street-food pop-up serving up savory tastes for your enjoyment.

SKRAPS is a documentation project capturing multidisciplinary artist Yasushi Matsui’s daily life and travels through ink and watercolor sketches, created on scrap paper collected during his journeys and compiled in hand-made sketchbooks since 2016.

In keeping with DIY Zine culture, these original drawings are scanned and printed with a home printer. The illustrated recollections of Yasushi’s journey are placed within carefully selected salvaged frames and presented as an iconic Zine that transcends chronological time and cultural geography, providing an incredible overview of experiences the artist deems noteworthy enough to document for posterity.

In February 2020, right before the lock-down, he exhibited the first four years of SKRAPS collections at Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose. Since then, it has been another five years of archives documenting his life during the pandemic in Northern California.
In commemoration of that, this exhibition showcases the entire collection of prints from the last five years of SKRAPS. Additionally, he released “book flip” videos of all his SKRAPS books on his YouTube Channel with his original soundtracks.

Yasushi Matsui, an art and craft lover, was born in the US, but grew up in Japan, and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is dedicated to drawing and painting. Over the past two decades, he has honed his skills through live painting at events and festivals, creating murals, producing commissioned illustrations, and collaborating with various artists and renowned brands such as Chrome industries and Moss Snowsticks. Matsui has exhibited his work in Northern California at venues including Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose, CA in February 2020, and Epitome Gallery in Eureka, CA in March 2023.

Our 2nd annual postcard show, “From San Francisco with Love” perfectly capped off our year with a beautiful celebration of art and community, and we’re overwhelmed and honored by the continued support of The City.

2024 was rough. But despite some challenging life curveballs, you guys gave us some of our brightest moments! Thank you to all the artists who’ve shared their brilliance with us and lent us their trust. And thank you to our friends, family, neighborhood and creative community, near and far, for your endless support. TigerBunny Studio has been the accidental gift of our lives and it is not lost on us how lucky we are.
