San Diego Summer Choral Festival

San Diego Summer Choral Festival Held in beautiful San Diego, CA, where participants can improve individual vocal technique, musicianship, and repertoire knowledge through performing!

Open to professionals, teachers, church musicians, and students, the San Diego Summer Choral Festival gives participants and audiences a taste of choral repertoire from different musical time periods, in multiple languages, and diverse styles through performance. Dr. Patrick Walders, Artistic Director, and distinguished faculty made up of performers, voice teachers, and scholars, lead participant

in voice building sessions, sectional and tutti rehearsals, individual voice lessons, and topical lectures each day. Every evening concludes with a performance of some kind whether it’s the Thursday evening Informal Faculty Showcase Concert, the Friday evening formal concert by the Festival Faculty and San Diego Pro Arte Voices, ensemble-in-residence, or the Saturday Festival Finale Concert, where participants perform the pieces they’ve worked on over the course of three days in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (Pacific Beach). Works from the classical canon to unknown gems to new compositions attracts all vocal musicians with varying abilities. Previous choral experience is preferred, but we will certainly not discourage the beginning choral musician or enthusiast! "Patrick [Walders] is an excellent conductor and I enjoyed all of the clinicians. Having a composer in residence or a 'musical personality' is an additional draw. We had a great time and made good music!" – Leslie

This festival will improve singing technique and get voices in a condition to sing well. It's a happy, energetic, very helpful singing experience, run by a really friendly, professional faculty. I can't leave out the professionals concerts (Festival Faculty and San Diego Pro Arte Voices): we could hear the results of all the things you were teaching during the festival. Amazing sounds!!!

"I enjoyed being able to give sustained focus to improving my vocal technique and expression in a group setting. Singing together with all the other participants—in the Schola under Luke and with the larger chorus under Patrick and Shawn—and sharing time, in general, with all faculty, staff, and other participants in the festival were highlights.

The program is extraordinarily well-planned, well-taught, enjoyable, and nurturing. What you learn and practice during the festival will continue to help you perform and develop long after the program itself has concluded."

"These festivals are opportunities to connect, sing new music, learn a different perspective on choir rehearsal practices, get expert singing lessons from Master artists, and hear amazing singers. It's great to be around excellent artists like Shawn, Jennifer, Angela, Luke, Tasha, Dr. Walders, and Dr. Chase, who are Masters of their art, but also kind and encouraging to students like me. This inspires me to keep working and gives me an example of excellence to reach for. Every year I learn at least one invaluable lesson about the voice that I don't hear anywhere else."
