This quote, from Paulo Coelho's novel, The Alchemist, ⁠is spoken by the mysterious king of Salem who challenges the protagonist to walk through a glorious palace while keeping a drop of oil in a spoon. The boy learns that when he focuses on retaining the drop of oil, he misses out on the beauty surrounding him. In his next attempt, the boy gets distracted by the grandiose details throughout the estate, and he loses the drop of oil. The moral of the parable is this: Soak up the wonders of the world, but keep your treasure in sight.
