In honor of sapphire being September’s birthstone, here’s a quick gemology lesson! 💎
Did you know that sapphires come in many different colors? Contrary to popular belief, not all sapphires are blue! A true, “pure” sapphire is completely clear and colorless. The color of the sapphire completely depends on the trace elements present during its formation. Blue sapphires get their colors from traces of iron and titanium.
Since blue sapphires are considered the industry standard (we can get into why that is a different time), any sapphire that is not blue is known as a “fancy sapphire”. Fancy sapphires can be pink, orange, green, purple, and violet.
A “sapphire” that is red is considered to be a ruby, even though they have almost an identical chemical makeup. They are both types of Corundum, except the red color of rubies comes from traces of Chromium. The only reason why they are considered different gemstones is because they were named centuries before modern chemistry discovered they are the same mineral.
