Please hear me out.
There’s a psychological event called Moral Disengagement that happens over time to good people. People like us.
When we’re presented with these atrocities and horrific events repeatedly for a prolonged period of time, we become disengaged.
It doesn’t happen all at once, it happens through small increments.
It happens when we don’t actually let ourselves process and FEEL the information, when we just scroll or bypass information without letting ourselves SIT with it and really FEEL our emotions.
The brain just files that information away and your threshold for what’s unbearable goes higher and gradually higher to where eventually these atrocities don’t seem so horrific.
We don’t notice it happening but it’s happening to our society right now.
I implore you to stop and sit with your feelings whenever this terrible information comes up.
The rage, grief and helplessness you feel is REAL and quite necessary.
Please just give yourself some grace and time to sit with those feelings and actually process what’s going on, don’t scroll past or ignore it.
Don’t let your brain override those emotions.
Because if we do, we become shells of ourselves and that’s how we become part of the apathetic problem that continues to let this s**t happen.
Ask yourself who are we slowly becoming as a society- as individuals?
I beg you to do the more difficult thing and not let your brain override your empathy.
P.S. Here’s a mixed media piece of doughnuts I’m currently working on.
