Something the Earth has in common with the Moon?
One surprising connection between Earth and the Moon comes from space itself—meteorites. Some of the rarest gemstones found on Earth are not truly from our planet at all. They are fragments of ancient asteroids that survived the fiery journey through Earth’s atmosphere. These stones began their lives billions of years ago in deep space, often forming within the cores of early celestial bodies. Composed mainly of iron and nickel, these meteorites cooled incredibly slowly over millions of years in the vacuum of space. This unique process created crystalline structures that cannot form naturally on Earth. Many of these stones are over 4 billion years old—nearly as old as our solar system itself. Both Earth and the Moon continue to be shaped by these cosmic visitors. During NASA’s Artemis II mission, astronauts and scientists were thrilled to witness brief flashes of light—caused by meteorites striking the Moon’s surface in real time. These rare observations remind us that space is still active, and that both worlds are constantly being touched by material from beyond. Because meteorites come from outside our world, many people believe they carry a special energy. Some say wearing them can help connect us to the universe, bringing guidance, strength, and inspiration.
On a buying trip overseas, I discovered a small collection of these extraordinary stones. They have been carefully cut, polished, and set into beautiful sterling silver pendants. Some are shaped like hearts, about the size of a nickel, while others are elegant ovals in half-inch and one-inch sizes.
