Crystal structure of Corundum which is the mineral that forms Rubies and Sapphires. I created this animation with the CIF obtained from COD from the publication by Struchkov, Y T et al. Corundum contains Aluminum and Oxygen and is colorless in it's pure form. Colors in Rubies and sapphires are due to trace elements such as Fe, Ti and Cr. Corundum crystallizes in trigonal space group R -3 c :H. Corundum is well known for their hardness with a 9 in the Mohs scale and just one less than that of Diamonds.

Another exquisite, historic piece of jewelry made with Red Spinel, which was believed to be Ruby until 1851. The main difference between a Red Spinel and Ruby is the Mohs hardness. Ruby=9, Garnet= 6.5-7.5.
