*tap tap* is this thing still on?
My last Frost Finery post was 4 years ago, and a LOT has happened since then. Today, I taught my first therapeutic metalsmithing class at Contemporary Craft and almost cried tears of happiness. I am full of joy because 4 years ago, I loved the idea of bridging metalsmithing and art therapy together, and it finally happened! But holy s**t, it took a lot to get here.
Two semesters into my Art Therapy/Counseling grad program at Seton Hill University, my Ziggy dog and my Dad died. Shortly after, my Mom had ovarian cancer (she is better now!) I had to take a break from school to step into the role of caregiver, navigate estate and financial affairs, and advocate for my mom’s healthcare with the medical system. Eventually, I ended up switching to PennWest University’s Art Therapy/Counseling program because I needed the flexibility of virtual grad school.
It’s been quite a journey juggling so many roles, challenges, and making sure I’m also present as mama. I’ve had moments of doubt about whether this new direction is the right one, especially at the beginning of my practicum at Family Hospice and whenever I’m writing papers into the wee hours of the morning.
Today, I can unequivocally say that I am grateful I stuck with this plan. I have deepened my relationship with art-making across many different media. I continue to learn so much from my clients, colleagues, professors, and supervisors about post-traumatic growth, the human experience, and how creative processes enhance resilience. In ~6 months, I WILL graduate and ya better bet I’ll preaching to everyone to swing some hammers, release stress, and create something beautiful so feelings of despair don’t take away your life energy.
Big thanks to and for helping me shape my dreams. Sending out all the love! 💜✨
