After 4 years of research, engineering and refinement the Studebaker Slip Joint is finally here for its first edition. Our ambition remains to create more intricate dies to strike the scales with more imagery and ornamentation, but we’re too excited to see a functional knife come together in our shop to keep it to ourselves! This release is extremely limited to 13 knives. Each one made from start to finish in our workshop. A little piece of old-school pocket knife tradition, with a whoooole lot of Studebaker nestled into it. We hope you love it as much as we do.
We chose S45VN for our blade alloy for many reasons, but most notably we wanted to select an alloy developed by Crucible Industries. The Crucible Steel Company of America was formed in 1900 as a merger of 13 regional producers from Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. In 1903 they opened the Park Works plant in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, and today we are proud to call their former plumbing and carpentry shop our home. Over the next century, Crucible was a leading developer of tool steel with numerous patents on both alloys and technology, eventually becoming the largest producer of tool steel in the country. Honoring the heritage of our building through this choice was effortless, as the steel itself is highly regarded as a premium alloy for knife making, with excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance.
The slip joint mechanism uses a simple spring to hold the blade in its opened and closed positions. As the knife pivots, the spring is displaced until it slips back into its resting position. A classic and minimal approach to a timeless design, the Studebaker Slip Joint will integrate effortlessly with your everyday carry, bringing a tangible connection to a long and fascinating history of metalcraft.
