Kahn Jewelers founder, Andrew G. Kahn, was born Kohn Andor Gabriel, 1889, Eger, Hungary. September, 2017, through my father Stanley Kahn’s DNA test, I learned of close family still in Hungary. Last month, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting my Kohn-Waldmann cousins in Budapest. The day trip to Eger was unforgettable!

Together, in St. Louis, MO, the Kohn brothers, and their 4 sisters, agreed to change the surname to “Kahn”. Oldest brother Ferenc/Frank purchased and ran a lingerie factory in St. Louis. Andor/Andrew worked for Frank and covered the “Arkansas territory.” There, in southeast Arkansas, Andrew took a job as a watchmaker, for which he had been trained as an apprentice in his hometown of Eger. Zolie eventually took a job in Kansas City, KS.

“Stanley was a sharp and innovative merchandiser and a great buyer,” said David Shapiro, a longtime friend and manager of Baim’s Department store, which was across the street from Kahn’s Jewelers in the 400 block of Main Street.

Shapiro said Kahn “had a good knowledge of his industry and was an excellent salesman.”

“He was also a lot of fun to have coffee with,” Shapiro said.

One of Kahn’s daughters, Adrianne, who lives in Hot Springs and continued the family business there, said her grandfather was an immigrant from Hungary who came to Pine Bluff and within a year, bought out the owners of what became Kahn Jewelers.
