Give me all the talismans and amulets! The Italian horn, also known as the Cornicello, resembles a twisted animal’s horn and has been worn for centuries to protect against the malocchio (evil eye) and foster good luck, health, fertility and strength. I’ve lost many people in my life and have attended many funerals. And somewhere along the line, I decided I was no longer going to wear black, I was going to wear color, flowery prints, etc, as a display of the joy that person brought to my life. I don’t want my mourning jewelry to echo what the Victorians did; I don’t want it to be dark and black and dismal. I want an open display of grief, yes, but also something that honors the brightness and joy in the memories, and celebrates the ongoing impact of the person who has died. One of the ways I do this with my designs is by using cremation ash in colorful enamel.

If you’ve been watching the new East of Eden adaptation of the book, you will see a whole lot of this style of jewelry on the leading men in the show. Grief is messy, beautiful, so difficult, eye-opening, life-changing. It took me a very long time to understand that my mourning jewelry is an offering. An offering to not shy away from grief, and to not be afraid to celebrate and live life even when a close one has died. This piece is the first mourning ring I ever offered, based on the loss of my sister, Donna. There is just something about initial rings, whether antique ones from the 1800s, or this more modern beauty, that are eternally classic. I unearthed this D on a trip in Vermont, and I was so delighted that I almost kept it for myself. Alas, it got scooped up, and I’m glad it did.

Alex came home from Montana with a handful of beautiful sapphires and a head full of memories. She wanted to make a piece she would wear each day that could remind her of the meaningful trip with her best friends. We hand selected the sapphires that worked best and created a one-of-a-kind design just for her. The open profile ring matches the uniqueness of the stones, with the lone pink sapphire bringing out the beautiful blues of the others. It’s a ring that is at once organic and fine. Such a beauty! If this is your ring size (7 1/4) or you’re reaching an anniversary of 10, run, don’t walk to the shop! An absolutely incredible vintage diamond band with beautiful leaf detailing and 10 hand caught diamonds bezel set around the perimeter. The diamonds slightly undulate across the band, speaking to its handmade nature. Such a beautiful piece that would make a perfect anniversary or wedding band.

This locket has the best of everything. Not only is its waterlily theme so indicative of the Art Nouveau period, but it has the most amazing and beautiful hand engraved letter on the back (which I believe to be a “D”). The chain is short, the length that’s perfect for a child. Almost a keeper, but alas it’s for you.

Obsessed! It’s always so awesome to unpack vintage treasures from a trip and then learn more about the history of the pieces. Decades ago, Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island were at the epicenter of jewelry manufacturing in the United States. While this is no longer the case, antique jewelry still tells of this history. This antique locket is such a beauty, message for details.
