A Symphony of Color in Glass

Lot 61 from Chinese S***f Bottles from the Estate of Dr. Thomas Klein showcases the extraordinary craftsmanship of Qing Dynasty glasswork.

Created circa 1800–1850, this six-color overlay glass s***f bottle features a luminous white ground intricately carved with sprays of lily, convolvulus, chrysanthemum, camellia, mallow, lotus, peony, and berries. Vibrant overlays in yellow, pink, turquoise, red, and blue are complemented by curling green leaves and a neatly carved green footrim.

The bottle has a distinguished provenance, having been sold at Sotheby’s London in 1983 before entering Dr. Thomas A. Klein’s collection.

Offered from Dr. Klein’s estate, proceeds will benefit the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

A Stone Shaped by Nature

Lot 24 from Chinese S***f Bottles from the Estate of Dr. Thomas Klein is an unusual Qing Dynasty puddingstone s***f bottle, dating to circa 1750–1860.

Its distinctive hexagonal form showcases the natural beauty of the stone itself: a warm beige matrix embedded with large, rounded pebbles in shades of orange, brown, and gray, contrasted by tiny black chips. Left undecorated, the bottle allows the organic patterning of the puddingstone to take center stage.

With an impressive provenance and exhibition history spanning museums and institutions in Beijing, London, New York, Taipei, Singapore, and beyond, this bottle was also featured in several important publications on Chinese s***f bottles.

Offered from the estate of Dr. Thomas A. Klein, proceeds will benefit the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

A $1.9 Million Day for Books & Manuscripts

Freeman’s August 20 Books & Manuscripts auction brought together an extraordinary range of American history—from documents connected to the nation’s Founding Fathers to rare African American and abolitionist material, religious texts, and iconic works of Americana.

The sale realized $1.9 million, led by an exceptionally rare Benjamin Franklin promissory note, printed and twice signed at his Passy press in December 1781, which sold for $352,000.

Among the other highlights:
• The Book of Mormon, first edition, 1830 — $230,400
• Paul Cuffe, autograph letter — $96,000
• George Washington, signed letter enclosing the Tariff Act of 1789 — $128,000
• Sultan of Morocco’s illuminated exequatur for American diplomat Thomas Barclay — $108,800
• Lincoln’s final Emancipation Proclamation, first obtainable broadside printing — $70,400

The auction also featured an important archive of abolitionist and anti-slavery material descended through the family of Rev. Samuel J. May. Across 20 lots, the collection achieved $233,808—nearly three times its presale estimate.

These remarkable objects remind us of the power of the written record to illuminate the people, ideas, and events that shaped American history.

A remarkable collection of Chinese s***f bottles comes to auction this September, offering 117 lots from the estate of Philadelphia collector Dr. Thomas Klein.

Featuring exceptional examples in jade, jadeite, agate, jasper, glass, porcelain, amber, coral, carved bamboo, and more, the collection reflects Dr. Klein’s discerning eye and deep interest in mineralogical and organic materials.

Many of the bottles were formerly part of celebrated collections, including the Bloch, Grimberg, J&J, and Bob C. Stevens collections, and were handled and published by leading specialists in the field.
