Essential Tips for Jewelry Buyers: How to Avoid Scams
Recently, many customers have raised concerns about buying jewelry online, questioning the authenticity and certificates. The photo shows an example where a certified stone (moissanite) turned out to be fake. Sometimes, jewelry arrives without the buyer's consent, showing up unexpectedly in the mailbox. These items can come with a warranty card, which, when scanned, directs clients to a website asking for personal information to "register" the item or claim the warranty. This is a tactic to gather your information for malicious purposes!
With the rise in scams, here are some essential tips to keep you safe and savvy:
π **Buy From Reputable Jewelers**: Check reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or family who have had longstanding experience with a jeweler.
π **Get an Independent Appraisal**: A certified gemologist can assess the piece's value and provide an unbiased opinion on its authenticity. Sometimes basic equipment at your local trusted jeweler is enough, but special gemological equipment at a laboratory may be needed.
π **Consultation Before Purchase**: We're happy to provide a consultation about jewelry you are about to purchase online.
π **Ensure Authentic Certificates**: Make sure you receive a recognized authentic certificate. Research online to learn how to detect a fake one.
π **Beware of Common Scams**:
* **Huge sales**: Always compare prices with reputable companies, as huge discounts often tells you about overinflated prices from the beginning.
* **Clear and Full Information**: Ensure you receive full and clear information about whether the item is gold-plated or solid gold and the nature of the stones.
* **Online Scams**: Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and always check the return policy.
* **Warranty and Service**: Make sure that there is somebody who can service your jewelry. If you bring it to other stores, it may void your warranty, and not all stores can repair others' jewelry due to insurance policies.
Unfortunately, we've had customers who purchased jewelry online and later found out the diamond was of lower grade quality than promised. After sending it back, the online shop claimed it was not the same diamond sent to the customer. They kept the diamond and never returned the money. Itβs hard to prove this kind of scam when the purchase is made online.
It's important to be informed to avoid falling victim to scams. We believe that purchasing jewelry should be an exciting experience, and we're here to help ensure your special moment won't be spoiled.
