Moss Agate History

Moss agate, also known as mocha stone, is a gemstone renowned for the greenish filaments that seem to resemble creeping moss or other vegetation. The alternative name comes from the Arabian city of Mocha in Yemen, which was an ancient source for the gemstone. There is some disagreement as to the interchangeability of these gemstone names though. Some argue mocha stone should be reserved for specific moss agate with brown or red coloring.
Moss agate, like most gemstones, has long been used for personal ornamentation. Some ancient cultures viewed moss agate as a healing stone. During the late 18th century, moss agate was widely regarded as a good luck stone in Britain. Due to the inclusions resembling moss or ferns, moss agate was also viewed as a stone of agriculture amongst gardeners and farmers. It's said European farmers once used to hang moss agate from trees and around the horns of oxen when plowing to encourage successful harvests.

Moss agate isn't actually moss or technically an agate, but the intriguing mottled patterns of cream, green-grey and black inclusions do have a moss-like appearance. The beautiful green shades ranging from sea green to dark forest green appear to float in the semitranslucent stone. While moss agate isn't strictly an agate because it's not banded, the stone does have the same chemical composition and intriguing patterns of agate. Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony, belonging to the quartz family, and is often found as fragments from weathered volcanic rock formed in fissures or as pebbles rather than in traditional agate layering.
The spreading moss-like dendritic inclusions you see in moss agate are mostly oxides of manganese or iron, and the colors vary depending on trace amounts of minerals or metals present, such as chrome. Some moss agate on the market can be dyed to improve overall color. Moss agate is chiefly found in India, Brazil, Uruguay, central Europe and the western United States.

More St Patricks Day Green gemstones! Tree Agate!

These 3 gemstone cabs are available to be made into a one of a kind heirloom piece for you! They would make really beautiful Tree of Life Pendants!

Tree agate is also known as dendritic agate. Dendrites are crystal inclusions that develop in foliage or tree branch-like patterns. In tree agate, these dendrites create a beautiful green dappling effect on a white base. This beautiful green and white stone has long been seen as having a deep connection to nature and was therefore viewed as the stone of plentitude by many civilizations. The ancient Greeks associated tree agate with dryads and the stone was sometimes buried in agricultural fields to promote a plentiful harvest.
The name agate itself harkens back to antiquity and the Achates River in Sicily where agates are thought to have been found. At least 3000 years ago, the Egyptians were making seals, rings and vessels from agate stones. Agate was not just a decorative stone and was long used as talismans in Egypt, Greece and India.

The distinctive inclusions that resemble vegetation in dendritic agate are a result of the presence of manganese and iron oxides finding their way into cracks of white quartz as it forms. Tree agate has a hardness of 6-1/2 to 7 with a specific gravity of 2.59 to 2.67. This type of agate is frequently mistaken for moss agate, but these stones have different mineral traces creating the unique green branch-like patterns. Tree agate is most commonly found in Brazil, China, India, Australia, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Uruguay and the United States.

Another St. Patricks Day Green gemstones to choose from!

These amazing, highly sought after gemstones are Malachite!

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2. This opaque, green-banded mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, in fractures and deep, underground spaces, where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical precipitation. Individual crystals are rare, but occur as slender to acicular prisms. Pseudomorphs after more tabular or blocky azurite crystals also occur.

Large quantities of malachite have been mined in the Urals, Russia. Ural malachite is not being mined at present, but G.N Vertushkova reports the possible discovery of new deposits of malachite in the Urals. It is found worldwide including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Gabon; Zambia; Tsumeb, Namibia; Mexico; Broken Hill, New South Wales; Burra, South Australia; Lyon, France; Timna Valley, Israel; and the Southwestern United States, most notably in Arizona.

Very safe to wear at jewelry, although mining and then the process to turn the raw stones into highly polished cabochons can be very toxic if you breathe in the dust due to the large amounts of copper they contain. This makes them higher in price and value than some other gemstones.

To honor St. Patricks Day, I will share a few different green stones today as well for you to choose from. Just know, none of these pictures do these gemstones any justice! Even the Jaspers from earlier today.

Green, Strawberry Quartz....

Green quartz is a macrocrystalline variety of the mineral quartz, the most abundant single mineral on earth. Most naturally occurring green quartz comes from a small mine in Brazil, with some minor deposits in Poland and Canada. Because natural green quartz is so rare, it is more commonly a heat-treated amethyst.

These 3 pieces are semi faceted and you can see their inclusions. I find these beautiful stones very cheerful!

All 3 are available to be made into a special, one of a kind heirloom piece just for you!

This is Picture Jasper (common variety)

Jasper - what is it? Today it is classified as an opaque, impure variety of silica from the family of quartz. It can come in almost any color but most commonly as red, yellow, brown or green. It can be found worldwide. But what about in biblical times? Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Assyrian, Greek and Latin. Probably the jasper of the ancients included stones which would now be considered chalcedony, and the emerald-like jasper may have been akin to modern-day chrysoprase.

These are Australian Picture Jasper!

Australian Red Picture Jasper is a variation of Picture Jasper with deep maroon inclusions. Australian Red Picture Jasper looks great with Smoky Quartz and is a rare variation of the common Picture Jasper, specifically sourced from the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Metaphysically, this stone is believed to have a powerful protective energy. Australian Red Picture Jasper is also said to hold healing properties that enhance focus, self-discipline, and positive productivity.
Jasper was used in the breast plates of the High Priests as described in the Bible.

All of these stones are available right now! You can choose one that speaks to you and I can design a piece just for you! Shoot me a PM and make you a one of a kind heirloom piece of artwork!

It’s been a rough winter for me physically as you all know. What I learned is just how blessed I am! So many friends and family praying for me and of course my wonderful husband David, Lia and my Mom taking care of me and helping with the puppies 💜

After both Si joints went through some stuff, I finally feel like I’m coming out of the woods now. After dinner last night I felt good enough to make this Tree of Life pendant. The stone is a dyed dendritic opal. It looks like a sunset to me!

How to care for your wire wrapped jewelry:

Wire wrapped jewelry can be more fragile than commercial made jewelry, so there are a few things you can do to keep your pieces looking brand new:

*Never sleep in them or shower with them on!
*Take rings off while doing dishes. I even take mine off while washing my hands.
*They can be washed with soapy water but should be rinsed and dried well!
*Store with the included non-tarnish strips and/or in a plastic bag when not going to be worn for a while. I’ve included some strips in your order for you to get your started, don’t throw them away!
I also included a polishing square. Try to use on the metal only as soft gemstone could be damaged there is a compound to polish built into the cloth. Don't use the polishing square or cloth on ear wires or rings that have been treated with the Eternal Coating, it will remove the coating!
*Chlorine and direct sunlight can severely damage sterling silver and semi-precious stones so please avoid prolonged exposure to both and be sure to store your jewelry out of direct sunlight and store them while swimming!
*Copper rings and earrings are treated with a special coating incase anyone has sensitive ears or your skin reacts to the copper. If your coating wears off, you can use clear fingernail polish to coat again, I like Sally Hansen Diamond top coat. Yes I use it myself! You could also get the coating I use: Eternal Coatings, bought on Amazon $16 comes with polishing cloths as well and will probably last you forever nearly!

If you follow the above, you’ll be able to enjoy your artisan crafted jewelry pieces forever and even pass your heirlooms pieces down to your children and grandchildren!

Thank you so much for adopting an heirloom piece from Catitude Creations and giving it a forever home! If for any reason your piece gets into trouble and needs help please contact me! My email: [email protected] or message me on Facebook.
