The 1935–1936 California-Pacific Exposition Half Dollar, better known as the San Diego Half Dollar, was created to help fund the city’s exposition.

Designed by acclaimed sculptor Robert Aitken, the coin features Minerva, a grizzly bear, and symbols from the California state seal on the obverse, with the exposition’s California Tower and Chapel of St. Francis on the reverse.

Despite an authorized mintage of 250,000, melting and re-issuing dramatically reduced the final surviving totals, leaving just 70,000 1935-S coins and 30,000 1936-D coins. Today, it remains one of the most admired classic U.S. commemorative half dollars.

A rare survivor from an era when American gold often disappeared overseas. 🪙

The 1814/3 Capped Head Left Half Eagle was struck from a single die pairing and is the second issue in a series produced through 1834. While the type had a larger overall mintage than its predecessor, extensive hoarding and melting left remarkably few examples behind.
