Commemorating 300 years of Long Island history, the 1936 Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar is a fascinating piece of American numismatic heritage. 🇺🇸
Created to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first Dutch settlement on Long Island in 1636, this commemorative coin features a unique design by Howard Kenneth Weinman, son of the famed sculptor behind the Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The obverse showcases overlapping portraits of a Dutch colonist and an Algonquin Native American, while the reverse depicts a 17th-century sailing ship navigating the seas of history.
Although intended for the 1936 celebrations, production delays meant the coins weren't struck until two months after the festivities had ended. Even so, they proved popular with collectors, with only 18,227 of the original 100,000 coins being returned for melting, leaving a net mintage of just 81,773.
